In the U.S., it sometimes feels as if everyone has an iPhone. And historically, Apple has dominated in terms of offering users the most apps, and offering developers the most lucrative place to sell apps.
But Apple's dominance in mobile apps appears to be slowly slipping away, especially in Asia, according to new data from Distimo, which measures app downloads in the Apple Store and Google Play.
The news ought to terrify Apple CEO Tim Cook. People don't buy phones because they like phones. They buy them because of what they can do - and that means apps. The iPhone has dominated apps in the last few years because its app universe was massive. But in huge markets like South Korea, Japan and China, Apple is no longer the automatic top choice in the app world, according to Distimo.
I strongly recommend reading the whole article because it has interesting discussion on sales figures in each market, but the bottom line is:
Apple is losing its dominance because the three highest growth markets in the world - South Korea, Japan and China - are Android markets, not Apple markets...
GOod
I'm ok with this entirely.
Ive said it many times before, I accept Google as the overlord of Earth.

Except for that nasty YouTube business.
Ive said it many times before, I accept Google as the overlord of Earth.
I would say that too if they didn't keep on fucking up Youtube.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
On a side note, I'm surprised that Apple's store has such a head start on the Playstore, considering Java is much more popular language than Objective C.
don't apple apps still have higher profits than android apps
[editline]20th December 2013[/editline]
though with most android apps being free with ads it doesn't matter

Yeah, because Google would never use asshole tactics in order to promote their own products.
Yeah, because Google would never use asshole tactics in order to promote their own products.
You say that as if they are the only company to do that.
Isn't Google Play more open to apps in terms of development, or am I just stating the obvious?
Starting to like the fact many apps now are deciding its time to start upgrading their UI to holo/their new guidelines
Like FB messenger for example is wonderful now because we're on par with iOS and it's faster, still waiting for FB to update itself to that
And ever since I got a nexus 4 and even when i upgraded it to 4.4 I haven't experienced any lag like i would a couple of years back, its super snappy even if i've got 10 active apps open
Do Ad-supported Android apps use Google AdSense?
Therefore further profiting Google?
I would say that too if they didn't keep on fucking up Youtube.
I wouldn't ever say that about any company

Monopoly is terrible. If Google owns anything, where is the competition? Where is the innovation? Google will control the tech flow and advancement.

I agree and all but this thread is about them compared to apple, who are the kings of being dicks to promote their products :v:

Competition forces companies to innovate or fail (unless oligopoly etc) but it doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't companies that want to innovate competition or not
I still prefer the iPhone over Android stuff. Most likely because I had a bad experience with an Android and remember the touch screen being unresponsive as fuck, and the entire phone was slow as shit even when just trying to text someone.

I can vouch, I thought that too when I had older models of Androids. However, the S4 and similarly modern devices are just as fast if not faster in some ways than iPhones.
probably because there are 3 to 4 times as many android devices as there are ios devices

New FB messenger is extremely fast on iOS, but the main client is slower than ever, I'm guessing this is a Facebook-wide problem, and not device specific.
It's only a matter of time before Apple starts losing in every sector to Android. Without Steve Jobs coming up with new tech they're kinda fucked imo. They're stocks and income have been decreasing ever since he died and android continues to grow.
I have had more android devices than Iphones and i have to say Ive always liked the way iPhone apps look. At least androids coming around with the focus on #holo but its still not great.

Early android was p horrible but once you try out a newer android phone for a few days (especially with stock Android, like what Google has on their Nexus line) most iOS devices just feel tiny as hell

After using my S4 for so long, my family's iPhones frankly feel like toys.

It's extremely fast on Android as well, conversations load and send quickly and uploading pictures is no longer a hassle, also you can send messages to other people without jumping into the app using chat heads which is a feature I've long awaited
The main fb client on Android is fast but it's just ugly and it barely compares with iOS, even though FB made a mission to not leave Android behind because of their phone or whatever they've failed on the main client

I used my cousins iPhone 5 after using my nexus 4 and I quickly noticed how small it feels compared to my phone

As much as I agree apple is going to have major issues without Jobs, they were massively losing market share to Android even while Jobs was alive. It would make sense for devs to lag behind a change in market share of devices so that's probably just slowly starting to happen
