German voters would elect the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Martin Schulz as chancellor if the country were to hold direct elections today, an opinion poll conducted for the German broadcaster ARD revealed on Thursday.
Schulz would receive 50 percent of votes cast while Angela Merkel, the current chancellor and head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), would receive 34 percent of the vote. However, even when they are called on to cast ballots in the September parliamentary elections, Germans will not directly vote for the chancellor.
So Germany, instead of following the pattern of electing populist right-wing idiots, will instead likely elect a social democrat, impressive.

it would suck for UK though :v:
Please save us from ourselves Germany.
In response to the hard brexit thing, we deserve it. Can't criticise him for that.
Reminder that this guy's candidacy is the result of some random Redditor parodying the Trump campaign.

haven't you heard? Political science is out. Meme magic is in.
So this guy believe in reinstating more sovereignty to the Countries themselves.
Anyone but Merkel pls

Currently Denmark would stand to get a left-wing government again in case of an election. Our most right-wing party (in parliament, that is) are also currently the biggest losers compared to the election results, having gone from 21.1% to 16.6% in the latest polls. That doesn't mean that the whole political landscape hasn't moved to the right on certain areas like immigration, though (and a smaller, more right wing party has presumably "stolen" votes from DF in the polls, though they don't stand to get any seats currently).
BUILD BRIDGES NOT WALLS
That's no difference. Maybe it will even get worse.

Can always go with AfD if you want it to be guaranteed to get worse

Implying political science has ever been in.
Ah yes the guy who apparently said that Germany exists only to ensure Israel's existence. I'm sorry, but in my view even more German guilt is only going to hurt us all.
Both Merkel and Schulz seem like good choices for the state of the world we're in right now, I like 'em both a lot but I only recently learned what kind of guy Schulz actually is :v: I like him so far, though.
It must be a terrifying experience to be the leader of Germany, knowing who's footsteps you are following. Granted it's a completely different country now.

Do also consider when he was born, 1955, literally less than a decade after the nazis were getting up to their fun. And really, that could just be politician talk, has he actually voted like the US in blind support of israel no matter what? Israel existing is one thing, imperialist israel is another.

Really applies to most countries if you wanna count old historical leaders.

Pretty much every outcome of Brexit is going to suck for us in some way. Because it's a economically irresponsible decision to make.
It's going to fuck me up, but part of me wants to see it fail hard because the Tories would never see the houses of commons again after that. Let alone 10 Downing Street. But us leaving at all then means we don't get back in until we go through the standard procedure so that's a good few generations of workers and their kids left in a sorry state.
In this every increasing bastion of ignorance that is western politics right now, it's somewhat reassuring to see some people are still very aware of the problems populist demagogues present to the countries they want to lead.

AfD is national populists. Anti-immigrant, anti-EU.
elaborate
Jammed straight into their manifesto is a lump of climate change denial to kick things off with something fun.
Internally they range from relatively sane and tolerable to batshit crazy, they're mostly just another right wing populist party.

They're copying The_Donald with The_Schulz subreddit. Make Europe great again = MEGA ant other memes.
Maybe it's working lol. I'm certainly hearing more about him since then.
What?

well you see, in 1994 reddit made this guy an MEP through the power of memes or some other bullcrap, duh!
they didnt, but theres a parody of r/the_donald i think with a whopping 11k subs (which was also made after he announced he may run for chancellor) is obviously the whole reason he's running

You vastly underestimate the power of the status quo.

Following in the footsteps as such great men as Charlemagne, Frederik II, and Von Bismarck, and such horrid men as Adolf Hitler and his cronies.
Hell of a pair of boots to fill, that's for sure.

Amusingly, just like Le Pen's party, AfD's leader has had to denounce members of her own party because their views are too extreme.

Its the same over here. UKIP councillors and MEP's regularly get caught up in racism spats or humiliated because they've said something like ridiculous like, and I quote “Are you aware that if you succeed in decarbonising Europe, our crops will have no natural gas to grow from!?,”
But to be fair the crown jewel of last year was that UKIP leadership hopeful getting punched by a member of his own party. The signs that these parties have been the rejects in politics for decades are showing all the time, its insane that they're now considered a palatable choice

There's an interview with Schulz where he adresses The_Schulz and thanks its users for their support. He literally thanks a subreddit.
Well, trump "did" an entire AMA on the_donald.
[sp]I put quotes since he hardly answered any questions and gave no answers[/sp]
