Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday the final pieces were in place for the 2015 launch of an economic union with Belarus and Kazakhstan that Moscow hopes can also be joined by Ukraine.
Putin promised following talks with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko that the so-called Eurasian Economic Union would turn into a new source of growth for all involved.
The alliance would replace a much looser Eurasian Customs Union that Russia formed with the two ex-Soviet nations in an effort to build up a free trade rival to the 28-nation EU bloc.
"Government representatives of the troika (Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus) ... have developed the draft of the institutional part of the Eurasian Economic Union agreement," Putin said in televised remarks.
"This document determines the international legal status, organisational frameworks, the objectives and mechanisms of how the union will operate starting on January 1, 2015," Putin said.
I hope they have an Early Access Alpha for this.

Can't wait for the UK to retaliate, by changing its name to something like "Brittania"
Man, this guy is really putin some pressure on the Ukraine with this.
No, it's just Russia trying to be more politically relevant in order to be more powerful. Though I hope this all collapses because Putin is a scumbag.
You guys are acting like it's just some plan Putin concocted together yesterday in the afternoon at one of his mansions to jab at Ukraine.
This shit has been in talks since 1994 and has been in active development for almost 3 years now, it isn't going anywhere and it's a good thing regardless of your views on Putin.

Doesn't matter if it was designed back then, the fact of the matter is Putin is in control of it now.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Putin may be a cunt when it comes to homosexual rights but the guy knows his economics.
Is the EU "just" an economic union?

It started out that way but its kinda becoming more of a confederacy as time goes by

he allowed western oil giants to come in and fix Siberia's gas pipeline and exported russian hardware and technology along with selling shittons of oil to pay off USSR debt and restore goverment funding. thats not a good sound long-term economic policy, moving forward they still have to deal with the crumbling education system, leftover relics from the USSR, and modernize their infrastructure which is aging worse than our stuff over here

Probably still better than the US education system.

That is the natural path of most supranational unions when they are not burdened by war or genocide.

Regardless, just from the sheer size of Russia, the guy has resources to play with. He has the cards he needs, just a matter of playing his hand right at this point.

The resources are there, but Russia lacks the immense infrastructure to get them to the point of being an economic powerhouse. They're making their way to that point, but it's slow and murky as Russia always gets things done.
