An American surfer who came face to face with a shark managed to punch the animal and then snap a photo of the encounter.
Kris Kerr was taking photos of his friend, Ethan Wilson, while they were surfing near Florida's Smyrna Beach — the shark-bite capital of the world — when he found himself facing the shark.
He claims he punched the shark before he was able to quickly take the picture.
Mr Kerr told CBS News he "definitely was not expecting" to come home with a picture like that on his camera.
Despite a misunderstanding since he thought his friend was in danger; touching a shark, let alone punching one, is very dangerous. For example, touching a shark may greatly provoke an attack. Injuring the shark is also another major consideration.
At least he wasn't an ass and did it under a misunderstanding though.
Tubular!!

He meant to punch it in the face.
That's what you're supposed to do if you can.
Any shark expert will tell you this.

You better be trolling or I would feel sad if you believed this.

They're less likely to follow through with an attack after you hit them. When they realize that what they thought was easy prey is able to hurt them, they're deterred. It's actually more effective to jab them in the gills, though.
Or gouge out their eyes.

But I wouldn't want to do that to any animal

Mind my bad reading skills. I was given the impression from creefer's post that this was a normal thing to do when encountering a shark.

Well, it's out of self-defense. I mean if a shark is just swimming around you aren't going to swim after it to punch it in the face lol. But if it's coming towards you and you're lucky enough to have seen it coming, punching it is the best solution. It's you or the shark, and it can do a whole lot more damage to you than you can do to it with a single punch. I've never seen a shark in person. I imagine I would freak the hell out though.

It's about the best thing you can do if you think the shark is going to bite you. Just whack it in the nose. You don't have to hit it really hard, unless it's a huge shark and it's really coming at you. The nose of a shark is full of nerve pores called the Ampullae of lorenzini. It's the most sensitive part of a shark, and rubbing it can put them into a trance(they also use it for electropreception(using the earths magnetic field as a road map, sensing electrical impulses from animals, etc)). Hitting it with some force, but not enough to damage it will make you less appetizing. The shark would want nothing to do with you after that.
At the speed a shark swims at you wouldnt need to hit it hard to hurt it.
