Footage of an armed police raid on internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom's New Zealand mansion is shown in an Auckland courtroom. The operation has now been ruled illegal and the hearing this week will determine what will happen to the computers, hard drives, luxury cars and art work seized during the raid
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/video/2012/aug/08/kim-dotcom-raid-police-mansion-video?newsfeed=true Video in source link. This video shows longer footage of the raid, including commentary by special forces officer and Kim Dotcom.
It's funny seeing an actual raid for once.
Do you really need 4 god damn guys with armor, automatic weapons, and a helicopter to arrest the guy? [editline]8th August 2012[/editline] Jesus christ, 4 vans, and dogs? What?
he could have been armed/resisted arrest
Yeah right. This was so much overkill.
he could have been armed/resisted arrest
Yeah, they looked at his score on Call of Duty and his position on the leaderboard and knew that they had to come in armed and loaded.
To be fair armed police arrested the Valve hacker too, they don't take risks.

But responded with that much force to prevent him from removing evidence from the servers. Servers who where ceased and disconnected by the fbi an hour before the raid.

There is no indication there were weapons on the property...and they classified him as a low threat. Was all of that really needed? I could understand having a few officers and a tac-squad available on standby in case something unexpected occurred...but...this seems overkill.
They should have just nuked the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure
The guy's rich enough to afford such a massive house, he could have a pretty decent security team. Okay, it turned out he didn't but the possibility was there.
No it still doesn't warrant 9 tactical units because security guards should know that if they shoot an officer they will be killed/arrested for life. And even if they did choose to "protect" Kim from the police by shooting at them they would be quickly over run, and even then they weren't wearing full protection so clearly they didn't think he was that big of a threat, because naturally you would want to protect your troops. This was a display of force you know it, I know it.
Man I want to be rich
They could have just phoned and asked him to come out and get into the police car and he would have complied.
cybercriminals are dangerous, guys cybercriminals
It is policy to go fully loaded even if target is possibly low threat because there have been several mistakes before when they though targets were low threat and killed or critically injured. It is just standard because sometimes intelligence is wrong.
Just because he's rich and suspected of big crimes on the internet doesn't mean he's some psycho with a hundred guns and a tank in his garage ready to shoot anyone who he doesn't want there, all he had was a good security system to protect himself and what's his. That was a hell of a lot of police to arrive just for one guy, even if they're just being prepared for anything that could happen (then the question of why they weren't wearing their full gear is raised).
Maybe I've been living under a rock but who is Kim Dotcom? Oh, never mind. It's the Megaupload guy.
Way too much to just arrest one civilian.

What?
Standard procedure, seems excessive at times but the procedure was developed for dealing with multiple armed criminals, so it does end up being over-the-top when it's just one fat guy.

I'm thinking they were trying to scare him.
HOLY SHIT A FAT GUY RUNNING A FILESHARING WEBSITE? HE'S A DIRECT THREAT TO EVERYONE, SEND ARMED POLICE, SPECIAL FORCES, HELICOPTERS, POLICE DOGS AND SOME MIRV'S JUST TO BE SURE COPYRIGHT INFRIGMENT IS SERIOUS BUSINESS
I bet the raid would have been much smaller if 'murika hadn't been involved
I bet the raid would have been much smaller if 'murika hadn't been involved
Would probably just been a policecar driving up and an officer or two politely knocking the door
Wait, Kim is a guy?
Wait, Kim is a guy?
What rock did you emerge from?
question did his parents actually give birth to a child with the last name 'Dotcom' or did he change it legally?
