[release]MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – A 17-year-old senior at Sequoyah High School was reportedly shoved, bumped in the chest and verbally harassed by his principal last week for wearing a T-shirt in support of efforts to establish a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club on campus. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Tennessee sent a letter to the school district today demanding that students’ rights to free speech be protected in the classroom.
The ACLU has been assisting the student, Chris Sigler, in his and other students’ efforts to overcome resistance from school officials to establish a GSA. Principal Maurice Moser had previously threatened to punish students who circulated petitions about the club.
“It is totally unacceptable that a young man who was peacefully exercising his First Amendment rights would have his speech shut down by the public school principal,” said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee. “Last week’s incident clearly illustrates the hostile environment LGBT students face at Sequoyah High School. Given this context, it’s especially important that supportive voices like Sigler’s can be heard in order to overcome the school’s resistance to a GSA.”
Sigler wore a homemade T-shirt to school last Tuesday that said “GSA: We’ve Got Your Back.” A teacher ordered Sigler to cover up the shirt in the future. Sigler, knowing he had a right to wear the shirt, wore it again Friday, and resisted an order to remove the shirt. Sigler says that Moser then ordered all students out of the classroom, except for Sigler’s sister Jessica, who refused to leave. According to both students, Moser then grabbed Sigler’s arm, shoved him, and chest-bumped him repeatedly while asking “Who’s the big man now?” Sigler’s mother reported that when she arrived at the school, she saw her son seated in a desk with Moser leaning over him and shouting in Sigler’s face. The Siglers filed a report about the incident that afternoon with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.[/release]
Tennessee once again, ladies and gentlemen

Sometimes I question why I live in gay-hating, bible-thumping hell.

How long until the police throw him in cells for being gay? I'll start taking bets.

I DO NOT BELIEVE THE LIBERAL MEDIA
Stay classy,Tennessee.
Ironically the Highschool was named after a famous Cherokee who developed the first written language for the Cherokee.
I guess they like to fuck over gay people along with the Injuns.

oh man dont become like that other guy with the ak47 threads
Should make a group:
Southerners against Homophobia and Racism.
I don't understand, why do people ever think this is right by any means? Sometimes I think they were brought up in a horrible environment for them to even think like that.
(... )Moser then grabbed Sigler’s arm, shoved him, and chest-bumped him repeatedly while asking “Who’s the big man now?”
Fuck someone should bring a knife and rid that guy of his balls, he seriously needs a little drop down his misplaced pride
[editline]bleh[/editline]
Or kick him in the balls that should help too
Obviously a 17 year old senior troll.
Obviously a 17 year old senior troll.
Yeah punch him in the face for defending an infamous cause in a backwards state where gays regularly get assaulted !
What the hell.
"Who's the big man now?"
Fuck someone should bring a knife and rid that guy of his balls, he seriously needs a little drop down his misplaced pride
Cutting someones balls off for harassing gays MIGHT, just MIGHT not help them tolerate gay people.
Fuck someone should bring a knife and rid that guy of his balls, he seriously needs a little drop down his misplaced pride
Or just have everyone wear a pro-gay shirt.
What the hell.
"Who's the big man now?"
Obviously the principle.
He smeared the queer.
I can't find any objective, mainstream news networks reporting on this, not even local news networks. If the story was true, the teen would have gone to the local newspapers first to cause a shitstorm, THEN he would have gone to the ACLU.
The only references to this case are from GBLT blogs, all citing the ACLU press release. Something tells me we're not getting the full story here.

I don't care about the link between gay rights and the incident, that guy fucking beat up a 17 years old kid for no reason and is proud of it
If no one ever flips out and beat the fuck out of the guy before the end of his career I would be really surprised, what an asshole
Sometimes I really wonder what the fuck is so disturbed in people that they feel the need to do shit like this? He better lose his job....

Maybe the teen knew that he should get in touch with lawyers before media because doing otherwise can jeopardize his case
Do you really think the ACLU would fabricate a press release

sounds like someone has a small peepee

You just don't want to believe it because it has ACLU written on it
I just don't "want to" believe it because I know what kind of damage these types of allegations can do to otherwise fine schools and communities. If this story turns out to be a steaming pile of shit, will the ACLU issue a correction? Will those LGBT blogs inform their readers that they were all wrong? Or will Sequoyah High School's reputation be tarnished and will the town of Madisonville be forever known as a gay-assaulting backwards hicksville town?
Never believe everything you read on the Internet.

The ACLU will likely legally HAVE to issue a correction or get hit with a libel lawsuit. I can't speak for the LGBT-rights blogs and they have no business being mentioned in this thread because I didn't cite them.
If I notice the ACLU issuing a correction I'll bump this thread with an update, and I encourage others to do the same

Great logic here: "I assume the article is faulty because I do not want to believe it!"

The ACLU never released a correction when they nearly sued my school over allegations that weren't true.
That incident tarnished my town's reputation and totally overshadowed everything they had going for them.
An alternative title for this article is "Homophobic school principal wants 17 year old boy to take his shirt off"

Proof?

I assume the article is not 100% true because it only includes one side of the story. They didn't even attempt to get the school administration's comment on the matter.
I believe something happened here, but I do not believe we're getting teh full story.
