Please believe I intend no sarcasm whatsoever when I say that the lockable, collapsable, under-seat storage box is one of the most useful innovations on the 2017 Ford Super Duty. Even if you don’t have a gun to put in it.
Pickup trucks can carry more crap than another type of passenger car, because obviously. But people driving them quickly realize this massive surplus of space is almost useless in a whole lot of “everyday lugging” scenarios.
It’s great to be able to carry a haul of firewood or mulch or motorcycles in your truck. But what do you do with things like documents and groceries and gym clothes? In the bed it’d blow away or get lifted by some light-fingered pedestrian. I know you’re not sloppy enough to just toss stuff on your seats, so where is anything small actually going to go?
If you spec the under-seat storage option on the 2017 Ford Super Duty, you’ve got yourself a perfect little box for “sensitive items, firearms, or anything you want out of the way” as described by Ford at their satellite unveiling of the truck in Irvine, California this morning.
Sometimes it's like jokes write themselves... :v:
I'm not very familiar with pickup trucks, but are floor storage compartments that rare for them? Most of the vans I've been in had them.
How is that funny? That's actually very practical.
This seems totally reasonable and useful for people who own this type of truck. Ha?
I know you’re not sloppy enough to just toss stuff on your seats
third line in and they've already lost me
Wish my truck had one. For guns and for storage space. I have to stuff all my tools and shit behind my seat and I ran out of room in a hurry.
I don't get why the article is written this way? It's not funny it seems like a reasonable and useful option for a pickup truck.

Oh it's definitely practical, no question about it... just implying that it tends to perpetuate the stereotype of the kind of people who usually purchase these trucks: southern, conservative and gun-toting hillbillies.
Either them, or douches turning them into "brodozers".
[editline]25th September 2015[/editline]
It's a shame not many people purchase them and use them to the best of their abilities, but then again, there's people who purchase Ferraris and use them to cruise no faster than 65 on a highway and show off... like keeping a lion in a tiny cage for the rest of his life. Oh well.

I saw a lot of people who bought trucks like that in So-cal when I lived there. They'd lift them up, put gigantic offroad tires on them, the full nine yards. But they would never take them out to the desert, despite only being a good 15-20 minutes out.

Truck I had had 2 in-floor caverns (This things were huge), 2 glove boxes, and under seat storage, and 2 areas in the center console, upper area for papers and stuff, lower for big things.
Trucks have so much storage area there's no hope to ever fill it all
Good for hunters I guess
Good for hunters I guess
I mean, storage spaces like that are good for everyone. Gloveboxes are far from enough given the amount of crap most people have in their cars.
Let's see, our 2012 F-150 has an enormous glovebox, a titanic center console, the rear seat bottoms fold up to make the entire rear section of the cabin a storage area, there's two under-floor storage compartments underneath that, there's a drawer under the passenger seat, and the entire bed can store things as well. And the center console compartment and glove box are lockable. This just looks like our underfloor areas but with a lock on it.
Not really seeing the problem here.
When you transport a gun it needs to be in a case or in the trunk, this storage would give a legal spot for it when you go hunting.
What an absolutely sexy truck.
I wish my truck had lockable storage boxes.

My dad just got a brand new F-150 and the thing is a vehicular masterpiece.
Lol. Of all the things I've longed for in my '85 F150 I don't think a locking gun case has ever been on the list.

I just wish they weren't so god damned enormous. I've parked my '85 F150 next to 2010 and newer models and it was positively dwarfed. An already large vehicle looked like a fucking go kart next to its descendents. WTF? That size is negating all the economy benefits from more efficient engines 'n shit, too, 90% sure its why they get no better mileage than mine.
This would be better than most locations for The Alleged Truck Gun, but pretty optimistic for anyone needing to move more hardware at a time than a deer hunter - that doesn't look like it would fit more than a single compact rifle bag.
I think this thread can explain why Facepunch has become more moderate leaning conservative in recent years.
On topic, I just don't get the appeal of trucks. Unless you're doing a lot of heavy lifting with things like bringing planks back to your area, then it just seems like it'd actually be worse at a lot of things for the exact reasons that are stated in the article.
thats a sweet looking truck

Trucks are incredibly practical for many reasons for many people. My 4x4 f150 crew gets 17mpg to 19mpg on the highway, which is no worse than most large SUVs while being so much more capable. They are comfortable and spacious. I have a cap on mine so i can securely haul in any weather. You have the benefit of not being able to get stuck in snow, and the ability to pull other people out of the snow which I do every season. As a furniture designer and someone who's working on home renovations I'm using the cargo aspect of my truck daily. For many people they just get them because they are comfortable and useful when you need it, and that's fine. As far as cost they don't cost that much more to operate and fuel costs differences are not that important because for most people if they can afford a 40-70k truck, they can eat a 5mpg hit from driving a big vehicle.
Awesome truck though, I've been waiting for a super duty refresh though, they've not had a major model change since 99', I hope to have a 350 diesel crew in a few years.

As someone who'll always have a truck in the driveway, here's what draws me to them. Bear in mind, I'm more drawn to >25 year old trucks, some of these reasons may not apply anymore.
* Rugged simplicity.
* Ease of home maintenance. At least with the older ones I like/own, there's nothing there that doesn't need to be there and what is there is easy as fuck to get to. I could just about to a complete engine overhaul without actually removing the block from the truck if need be. I have changed the head gasket and clutch without removing the motor from the vehicle. All you really need to fix 'em is a basic set of hand tools, floor jack, air compressor, cherry picker, jackstands, an impact gun, and a weekend free.
* Practicality.
* Cheapness of replacement parts, both routine and not. I can change my clutch for $250 and a weekend of sweat equity.
* Off-road capability.
* They wear dents, dings and scratches with pride, rather than shame. A clean, pristine, spotless truck is one that's never been used properly!
* More durable than cars
* Saves money on shipping for appliances, furniture, etc. This is the majority of the use mine has seen lately.
* If you live out in the sticks like I do they're a godsend for dealing with household trash.
* Mine's cheap as shit to insure. Buying just liability for my '85 F150 is, and I'm not exaggerating here, just 25 bucks a month. That's it.
I'll never not own a truck. They're not ideal DDs but they're far too practical for me to not have one on hand.

You don't need a truck until you need a truck.

I haven't parked it yet and I'm not looking forward to doing so because it is massive. I don't like parking my 06 Silverado 1500 as is. Though the backup camera makes backing up into a spot almost effortless. The bed lights and mirror spotlights are incredibly useful. The all glass roof with a full fabric cover is a nice luxury. Didn't even notice until dad pressed the button to make the cover retract and blew my mind. Interior accent lights are a nice little detail too. If a door is ajar, it will glow red so you're well aware, then turn to blue once it's properly shut. You can choose what color you want it to be, too. But that's just an unnecessary detail that I thought was neat. Still not used to the keyless entry or the fact that you need to unlock it to open the bed. I also don't like that it plays fake V8 engine sounds because the V6 EcoBoost isn't manly enough.
You can also get this for people that can't reverse for the life of them:

They also have the automatic parallel-parking thing. Won't be long before the car can park itself anywhere.

Or you have gone the long way and started off in a big car, moved to an SUV, gotten a bigger one, and one day you woke up with a 10 gallon hat and can't fit it in your current ride
My brothers looking into a truck, even though his commute is killing him on gas and maintenance for his already large 4x4 suv

Heh, one nice thing that I adore about the older ones there. Hell, the '99 P71 I bought last week turns significantly wider than my '85 F150!
The bed lights and mirror spotlights are incredibly useful.
I'll prolly retrofit those to mine at some point during its imminent restoration, honestly. That, cruise control, bucket seats, a nice modern AM/FM radio(Possibly a SYNC from a newer F150 haven't decided yet), and probably an R-134a conversion for the factory aircon it has.
If a door is ajar, it will glow red so you're well aware, then turn to blue once it's properly shut.
My warning was always the door making the most ungodly clatter you ever heard going down the road :v:
Then again, if there's one thing time was least kind to on mine, it'd be the doors. Slam them hard as you want, latched secure and not coming open, they still rattled and flopped a bit.

That is simply ridiculous. Turbocharged V6s can sound like absolute monsters, they should just make the actual engine sound good instead.

Intersting technology but ultimately a pointless one, one to solve a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. Reversing a car is one of the most basic maneuvers one could ever perform and being able to competently reverse anything their license allows them to drive should be mandatory knowledge for holding said license. Oh well.

Steer your roomie into a mid-to-late-80s Toyota Hilux. 22RE gets way better MPG than even the most miserly of Detroit half-tons, 4WD, tough as if not tougher than the best Detroit offers, and maintenance is gonna be pennies on it. He can have his truck cake and afford to eat it too!

Well going faster would get you pulled over for speeding.
Not a fan of Ford in the slightest but I don't see anything wrong with this, even if you're not into shooting you could probably find some other use for a floor compartment and it's optional anyhow. It looks like you're intended to put your gun in without it being in a case though, so that'd be a problem if you lived in a rural area. People generally do not like to see guns out of their cases walking about here.

yeah fuck em for following the laws and driving safely right?
super car owners driving unsafely fast on the highway is exactly one of the reasons why so many people dislike people who drive them
if you want to go extremely fast, do it on the track

I don't think he was suggesting otherwise, but rather talking about the people who don't take it to the track at all and just use it like a normal car.
