Senator Floats Idea To Penalize Low-Income Women Who Have Children
At a luncheon for the Chamber of Commerce in Lexington, KY, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) floated the idea of capping government benefits for women who have children out of wedlock, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.
While he said that preventing unplanned pregnancies should be in the hands of communities and families, he added, “Maybe we have to say ‘enough’s enough, you shouldn’t be having kids after a certain amount.”‘ He went on to say, “I don’t know how you do all that because then it’s tough to tell a woman with four kids that she’s got a fifth kid we’re not going to give her any more money. But we have to figure out how to get that message through because that is part of the answer.”
These policies were initially adopted in an attempt to dissuade low-income women from having more children out of wedlock. But the results haven’t panned out. A 2001 Government Accountability Office report on whether or not they change birth rates couldn’t conclude whether there was any impact. In California, for example, where the state has been considering a repeal of its family cap policy, most women who receive welfare from the state have a similar number of children as those who don’t. What the policies do end up doing, however, is pushing people further into poverty. That can have serious health risks, with one study finding that some limits on benefits lead to a higher death rate.
The Senator also told the luncheon audience that being “married with kids versus unmarried with kids is the difference between living in poverty and not” and that the government “should sell that message.”
Sounds like something a liberal would do tbh

Cut benefits for poor people?

huh
"the idea of capping government benefits for women who have children out of wedlock"
its funny that whenever someone says something stupid on your side of the political spectrum, you'd go 'nar its what the other side would say'
No, I mean it seems to follow the whole eugenics bullcrap in some respect

which was a liberal program?

"I don't care if you and your kids are being beaten to death, stick with your partner"
I get the idea behind it, though I'm not sure how you'd go about dealing with it without pissing everyone off honestly.
Yes because the best way to address the problem is to punish both the mother and child
The only way this could POSSIBLY work would be taking the kids away to foster homes, EXCEPT that still is a shit idea and wouldn't really help anyone.

That's because it's a terrible idea that only serves to worsen already bad situations by sinking povertous families even deeper into destitution. The entire concept of this idea is reprehensible.

Some people don't deserve to have kids. Some people don't deserve to breed due to stupidity. That's the upside of things like abortion - better to prevent a pregnancy before the brain cells gestate than to give birth to a life who will only see hardship and poverty. Eugenics could do some good, perhaps things like having a license to have a child would work wonders and solve the problem of stupid, irresponsible people procreating constantly. In all seriousness, if you let human nature work it's way out when dealing with procreation it tends to lead to nothing good.
I think this is a great idea though. Disagree with me I could hardly give a fuck.

That's all nice until someone decides you're the one who shouldn't breed. I don't think you'd enjoy this shoe on your foot.
And that's before the ever-present issue of race inevitably enters the equation. What happens when non-white communities are denied the right to breed disproportionately?
Edit: Not that stopping you breeding wouldn't be a good idea, but the potential collateral is unacceptable.
I really can't think of how to make it work, but something needs to be done.
If a woman with pretty much no income to support them, decides to have five children, it really is her fault she can't pay for it. It is totally preventable. Should she be supported personally in doing this? No.
I can't think of any way to handle it aside from putting the children in foster care though, and that pretty rarely turns out well.

um well i was sort of in agreement with the OP's post but this is kind of insane and self-righteous; who are you to determine who should and should not have kids? what if your insane amount of elitism is considered grounds for not being allowed to breed in the ~perfect society~
this concept is both petty, trivial, and based on some concept that people can tell others what they deserve out of life
regardless, while i think its a good idea to prevent people from abusing the system while having children when they obviously cannot care for the ones they already have, i cant argue with the statistics and facts that the article also mentions
if this system of dissuasion doesn't work, and only drives people into poverty, and if women are having the same amount of children regardless of whether they are married or not, then its a silly idea completely

Penalization is an option but then the kids would be screwed over too, and they haven't done anything wrong.

Racism is a thing of the past. It would work in the same way we only let those with college degrees become sperm donors. If there was a racist element it would be blown out of the water.

Is it justified for the children to go without food, education, and healthcare just so that we can try to prove some ridiculous point to their mother?

lol no

You should try and sell it as a sub-plot for a dystopian novel.
Would turn out to be a Children of men, but with a political statement.

Enforce adoption then. If they can't provide, take the kids away.
In fact, I think it would be a great idea to conscript children who get sent to orphanages.

I hope the weather is nicer in whatever mystical place you live in, because it's cold as fuck down here on Earth.
Why is it that poor people have lots of kids anyway? Is it because they're too lazy to use a form of birth control?
It would work in the same way we only let those with college degrees become sperm donors.
also you can donate sperm without a college degree, there is just some preference on the receiving end of the spectrum for high quality sperm, which usually implies "tall, handsome and college degree."
there is no legal thing preventing non-college graduates from donating
