[release]Last year AT&T blocked access to 4chan for about a day, due to a DDoS attack against the site. I'd love to hear Verizon's reasons on why they've blocked the site now, and how they're going avoid the inevitable shitstorm.
Writing on the 4chan Status blog last night, founder Moot confirmed the site was down for Verizon customers, saying:
"After an hour and a half on the phone, we've received confirmation from Verizon's Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are "explicitly blocked.""
Earlier yesterday morning, he said that they've been "receiving reports from Verizon Wireless customers having difficulty accessing the image boards," for at least 72 hours.
"After investigating, we found that Verizon is dropping traffic to/from boards.4chan.org, only on port 80 (HTTP). No other subdomain/IP/port is affected, which leads us to believe this block is intentional."
With access blocked for over four days now supposedly, Verizon might just find they're on the receiving end of a nasty battle headed their way.

Guy 1: Gee Guys let's aggravate the literal and metaphorical internet hornets' nest
Guy 2: I mean, AT&T's attack on the site last year was sooo successful.
It's gonna get ugly... :/
... And nothing of value was lost.
Why does 4chan even exist?

Ten year olds need their stale memes and to fap to furries.

that's not the point. verizon has no right to censor the internet. just because /b is a shithole does not mean all the other boards are.
Time to watch the 'Tards fight :munch:

aliens
Some parts of 4chan are actually good (g, p, v and sci)
Regardless of the site... Censorship like this is just as bad as China. ISPs have no right to censor sites like Verizon are doing and it won't just be 4chan that ends up getting censored.
First they took away 4chan, I did not speak out because I was not retarded.
Then they took away Something Awful, I did not speak out because I was not 12 years old.
Then they took away Reddit, and there was no one left to speak out for me.
I'm all in for banning 4chan off the face of earth, but censoring the internet is a dicky thing to do.
Actually, I'm pretty sure they do have the right to censor webpages. Just like a book store has the right to not sell certain books.

I always find it funny when FP members have a go at 4chan. It's like watching the bible-belt nutjobs screaming at Islamist extremists.
Well. You'd still be able to just use OpenDNS or any alternative DNS.

Well, good sir, at least they don't do it here.
Actually, I'm pretty sure they do have the right to censor webpages. Just like a book store has the right to not sell certain books.
An ISP =/= a book store.
Actually, I'm pretty sure they do have the right to censor webpages. Just like a book store has the right to not sell certain books.
Bad analogy. Book stores profit based on what books they stock. Verizon profits for people paying for their internet. This is more like a library refusing to have a book.
Glad to know I switched to Comcast before this shit went down.
Hurr durr, 4chan sux, gief me respect

Like real ganstas', you can usually spot the "dedicated ganstas'" of Facepunch by looking for the OIFY insignia in their avatars.
I'm against censorship of any kind and this kinda sucks especially for you guys who some how enjoy that site.
Bad analogy. Book stores profit based on what books they stock. Verizon profits for people paying for their internet. This is more like a library refusing to have a book.
But they're still private companies, and since they need to compete with other ISPs, not censoring is in their best interest.
No complaints here but I'm against censorship of any kind so this kinda sucks especially for you guys who some how enjoy that site.
hahaha you have a megadeth avatar and are supporting censorship
hahaha you have a megadeth avatar and are supporting censorship
What?, someone is good at reading
What?
i dont support censorship but i dont like 4chan so its okay
Actually, I'm pretty sure they do have the right to censor webpages. Just like a book store has the right to not sell certain books.
I read Verizon's entire Terms of Service once, and there's a lot of outragous shit in it.
2: Specific Examples of AUP Violations. The following are examples of conduct which may lead to termination of your Service. Without limiting the general policy in Section 1, it is a violation of the Agreement and this AUP to: ... (e) post off-topic information on message boards, chat rooms or social networking sites; (f) engage in conduct that is defamatory, fraudulent, obscene or deceptive; ... (i) generate excessive amounts of email or other Internet traffic; ...
That is from the Verizon FiOS Terms of Service. If they go as far as saying you can't even derail threads on Internet forums, I'm willing to bet that they have something in their ToS that allows them to censor websites, though I can't see why they'd want to censor websites given the shitstorm censorship creates these days.
4chan banned most of Poland from registering on their site, because of dynamic IP abuse XD
herp derp lets all hate on 4chan even though 90% of FP were regular lurkers at least once in their life
i dont support censorship but i dont like 4chan so its okay
Saying that you don't like censorship but you don't have a problem with Verizon censoring 4chan is completely contradictory.
No ISP should censor any website or webpage.
Bad analogy. Book stores profit based on what books they stock. Verizon profits for people paying for their internet. This is more like a library refusing to have a book.
Except this library is privately owned and 4chan has no special 'right' to be heard on every ISP.
Although I can understand why people are unhappy.
But 4chan amuses me sometimes. :saddowns:
At any rate shit's gonna go down
