Speedway International is located at 40 Nicolas Ave., near Marion and Archibald. The owner, Royce Rostecki, was already at home when the fire started. A relative of Rostecki’s tells Global News the plant normally shuts down between four and five p.m. Both CN and CP rail have been alerted to the massive blaze. Fire crews are currently dousing rail cars next to Speedway International as a preventative measure. At one point they were able to get within 150 metres of the blaze but have since been moved back to about 600 metres. Speedway International stores 170,000 litres of methanol, 400,000 litres of racing gas, and 300,000 litres of biodiesel. "Numerous roadways in the surrounding area have been closed to all traffic," Winnipeg police said in a statement. "As a result of the fire, some evacuations in the immediate area have already occurred." Police were also warning people who might be tempted to come out and watch the fire to stay home. "Emergency personnel have noted that some members of the public have made their way toward the scene due to curiosity. These individuals are requested to leave the area immediately." Witnesses said they could feel heat on their faces from blocks away. Speedway International says its Pro Comp racing methanol can be shipped throughout North America in sealed 55-gallon drums via tank trucks and by rail. "Pro Comp racing methanol will provide more horsepower, more torque and longer engine life than any other industrial grade or off-spec methanol," the company says on its website. It says the fuel is used for drag racing and Indy car racing.
Picture of the smoke from jklas of reddit in the /r/winnipeg post: [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/aqAPO.jpg[/thumb] Smoke plume on doppler radar:
Just to let people know, foam is normal for firefighters to use when there is chemicals - Especially fuel.
I assume the odd thin lines in the second .gif are the outlines of buildings? Because of so that's actually pretty damn cool.
2 Videos I took. I was stuck at the minimum safety distance, since there was a cop near by. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiHounOWT2Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw16iCQTDOA

holy shit
I got evacuated, I'm surprised to see this here. My mom says she saw a massive fireball.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw16iCQTDOA
"I think the tankers are coming apart" "Hueh." "I'm not even joking" I love it
Theres 4 Rail cars they were concerned about. 1 is an empty Bio Diesel tank, ones is a 1/2 full Bio Diesel tank, one has 378,000L of Methanol and The last one I forget. one of the rail cars de-railed when they attemped to move them with another train. The large explosion earlier was the 53' Truck tanker that blew up. I can't imagine the mess and explosion if the methonal Car was to blow. They brought the OshKosh Crash-Truck from C17 Wing to fight the fire with foam at about 10pm. Not That theres much radio chatter left now, but You can hear the FD on my website. Oh wow I'm in stonewall, didn't know there were so many FPers in Winnipeg. My dad works as a firefighter in Winnipeg, but he's in Italy right now on vacation :v: Don't know if he would have had to go to this.
Oh wow I'm in stonewall, didn't know there were so many FPers in Winnipeg.
I had no clue there were a lot of WPG FPers either. This thread practically brought them all out from lurking.
garry, we need a winnipeg subforum please.
Yesyesyesyes :v:
I assume the odd thin lines in the second .gif are the outlines of buildings? Because of so that's actually pretty damn cool.
That's actually radar clutter, and not buildings. Shows up on both Canadian radars and US NEXRAD radars. It's usually birds flying by and other small objects. If it were buildings, the echoes wouldn't be moving around. An example of some sort of building showing up on radar would be windmills. [editline]2nd October 2012[/editline] Also, here's a tip to everyone: please don't stop in the middle of the road just to take pictures, some people may just want to GTFO of the area right away.
sweet guinea pig of winnipeg
CNN fucked up with their on-air story about it, and spelled the city as "Winnpieg". This is like what, the third fuckup in two months involving the city?
It says the fuel is used for drag racing and Indy car racing.
damn, that shits almost like rocket fuel
I live all the way in the edge of the city and could still clearly see the smoke.
I've heard that the smoke was visible even out of town.
garry, we need a winnipeg subforum please.
Since there are no subforums as they were converted to GD threads, anyone can go and make one.
oh shit my cousins moved there like a week ago shit shit shit
oh shit my cousins moved there like a week ago shit shit shit
They are probably fine unless the lived in that fuel storage facility
