TO earn this PhD, you need to hit the books - specifically, Japanese comic books.
Japan's Kyoto Seika University said today it will launch the country's first doctoral program in manga studies next year.
The private university in western Japan is well known for its manga and anime programs and established a master's degree course in manga last year.
Manga comics and graphic novels are often less action-oriented and cuter than their traditional US counterparts.
The university says it has received overseas requests for an advanced center for manga research, and that the industry is in transition amid globalisation and the growth of digital media.
The university plans to enroll four doctoral students starting next year.[/release]
What

A doctor that doesn't cure anybody? :wtc:?

Gordon Freeman is a doctor
Doctor doesn't JUST mean healer. It's also a term for those who hold a doctorate, a sort of qualification. Also, to the people of the Gamma Forests, it means "mighty warrior".
A doctorate in mangas seems almost like a degree in Japanese literature if you ask me, although animes are technically a more visual media.
Oh great, the Otaku are actually going to come out of their dens and show off their pillows. :tinfoil:

Do you seriously not know what a doctorate degree is...
So I guess they're practically giving Ph.D's away to people who can't hack it in real fields. Heh.
Well, if manga and anime is a pretty big part of japanese culture, I guess it's important enough to them to give doctorates of it.
Also, to the people of the Gamma Forests, it means "mighty warrior".
how did I know you would say that
I see nothing wrong with this. We have literature studies, so why not manga studies? Quite a lot of mangas are actually damn good with deep stories and good art. But then again, they get overshadowed by kawaii fanservice titty bounche mangas.
I'd do it for the title. If you have the money to throw away to get it, but you'd be enjoying yourself aswell.

I'm a Doctor Who enthusiast with a sense of opportunism, how could you NOT know i'd say it?
The opportunity arose, and I did a "carpe diem", seizing the day.

How do you not know what a doctor is? Doctor /=/ Physician, Medical Doctor = Physician
You would still have to write a thesis just like any other PhD. This isn't going to be a cakewalk like many FPers think it will be.

Cakewalk or not it's not exactly a respectable occupation

I have do I get to be an elitist now?

Sorry but a literature degree isn't either. There's not much difference between manga and books. The difference is that mangas have more images. That's about it.
And I who thought some other fields were bad.

Engineering, physics, maths, economy/finance, or heck even history and languages. This is like, on par with art or poetry/philosophy (if you can even get a Ph.D's in that).

My dad always told me if a book has too many images in it, it's terrible
And I thought the walking class at my community college was bad.
