• Tony Abbott refuses to say if the Commonwealth government has paid asylum boat crews
Fairfax Media reported that officials last month paid the captain and crew of a vessel with 65 migrants onboard who were then returned to Indonesia. Fairfax quoted an Indonesian police chief on the remote island of Rote saying the six crew members said they had each been given $US5,000 by Australian officials. Mr Abbott said today that "creative strategies" have been developed to stop the boats. "What we do is stop the boats by hook or by crook, because that's what we've got to do and that's what we've successfully done," Mr Abbott told Macquarie Radio. "By hook or by crook we are going to stop the trade. "I am proud of the work our border protection agencies have done, I really am proud of the work that they've done and they've been incredibly creative in coming up with a whole range of strategies to break this evil trade. "We will do whatever is reasonably necessary to protect our country from people smuggling and from the effect of this evil and damaging trade." Mr Abbott would not go into further details about the allegation, saying the Government does not comment on operational matters, and the work of security agencies should not be discussed publically. He also sidestepped questions about whether it is acceptable to pay people smugglers, and whether there should be an investigation.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-12/abbott-refuses-to-deny-people-smugglers-paid-to-turn-back/6540866 Good to see tax payers money is being well spent instead of going to that god forbidden medicare or centrelink
Please don't tell me that our method of stopping the boats was to pay them off.
So they take an exorbitant amount of money from the refugees, arrive here, and get paid to back home without necessarily guaranteeing that their passengers come home with them?
Please don't tell me that our method of stopping the boats was to pay them off.
it's "creative", you wouldn't understand filthy left winger
If this is true then Australia is complicit with the act itself. I hope that other countries call us out on this bullshit, and that Indonesia calls us out for redirecting sending asylum seekers to them. No wonder why there was so much hush-hush around operations after Abbott became PM.
Yes Tony, paying them off will stop the boats and not at all encourage them to keep coming back for more payoffs.
This seems like a desperate attempt to stop the boats so that they could keep their promise and prolong their time in power. Somehow I don't think it'll go that way. I hope Australia gets in deep shit for this if it's true.
How many more days until we can boot these assholes out of office?
How many more days until we can boot these assholes out of office?
384 days at the earliest. 581 days at the latest. I reckon it will be the second Saturday in September (10/9/16), so 455 days. ...or any time between now and July 1st if the PM asks the Governor General to dissolve both houses. If ALP want to strip them of control, then Shorten will want to pull the finger out of his ass and start acting like an opposition leader; LNP ministers have left ammo all over the joint.

That said, it's getting to the point where most of Australia would prefer a corpse compared to Abbott.
I wouldn't call Tony a douche because a douche is actually useful.
I wouldn't call Tony a douche because a douche is actually useful.
sounds like a zinger bill shorten would make
If this is true, wouldn't this technically be people smuggling by the Au government?
Abbott sounds like a politician fit for U.S. government.
Yes Tony, paying them off will stop the boats and not at all encourage them to keep coming back for more payoffs.
So he and his party will be directly responsible for handouts to illegals? This doesn't sound like it could bite him later on now could it
