President Obama announced on Sunday that Mount McKinley was being renamed Denali, using his executive power to restore an Alaska Native name with deep cultural significance to the tallest mountain in North America.
The move came on the eve of Mr. Obama’s trip to Alaska, where he will spend three days promoting aggressive action to combat climate change, and is part of a series of steps he will make there meant to address the concerns of Alaska Native tribes.
It is the latest bid by the president to fulfill his 2008 campaign promise to improve relations between the federal government and the nation’s Native American tribes, an important political constituency that has a long history of grievances against the government.
Fine by me, we already call it Denali National Park.
Denali National Park and Preserve is a national park and preserve located in Interior Alaska, centered on Denali, the highest mountain in North America.
Wikipedia is fast.
I don't care what a mountain is called. It's just something so you can pick that particular mountain out from other mountains.
But I'm all for denaming everything to what the natives called it, so we can really confuse the rest of the world.
Also everybody around the area calls the peak Denali anyway. It was a bit confusing when I visited a decade ago.
I always knew it as Denali, it wasn't until high school that I discovered Mt. McKinley and Denali were the same thing.
I wonder what other natural landmarks can have their original Native American name restored.
brought to you by that liberal fascist Obama!
i can't wait for the republican backlash for some reason, even though alaska has been lobbying for this for years
I'm a republican, and returning to the native name is a fantastic idea. I think too much of their culture has been lost already. Let's get more of it back I say.
(although I don't vote really, and most republicans in the media are bumbling idiots. But then again, IMO, most politicians are anyways. )
While McKinley does roll off the tongue nicely, Denali just sounds so badass. I'm up for it.

maybe the old name will live on in the beer though they might probably change the name later

Most Republicans I know (as well as myself) don't have a problem in restoring landmarks original names.
Mr. Obama, freed from the political constraints of an impending election in the latter half of his second term, was also moving to put to rest a yearslong fight over the name of the mountain that has pit Alaska against electorally powerful Ohio, the birthplace of President William McKinley, for whom it was christened in 1896.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, introduced legislation in January to rename the peak, but Ohio lawmakers sought to block the move.
Ohio really fought against this name? Like... its not even in ur state mate.
Mr. McKinley was assassinated in 1901, six months into his second term, and never visited Alaska.
Why do they give a shit?
Ooh, been there once!
Yeah, makes sense. Pretty much all the locals were already calling it Denali anyway.
Ooh, can we rename Everest as well? Sagarmartha is a much cooler name.
Went to fox to see the comments on this story. Was not disappointed.
"The only difference between OBAMA and OSAMA is a little B.S"
"Barack Obama is the worst president in U.S. history."
"I never knew the USA is a country run by a dictator. Since when does our dictator have the right to do anything he wants with no Congressional or State approval???? Did he go through Alaska authorities or is he again acting like the little tyrant he has always been?"
"sorry obama, but i will always call it Mt McKinley"
"Obama wants to name it after Mohammad.............but he doesn't think he can get away with it."

People need to learn how to read.

you should be surprised people like that can write in the first place
Why not call it as Mt Denali Mckinley. At least it pleases both sides

Up until today, it was named after a president born in Ohio.

There are no "sides." There is almost everyone who agrees that renaming it is a good idea and there is a tiny minority of ignorant conservatives who don't have a single justification to keep the old name.

Alaska has been calling it Denali for a few decades now, they stopped calling it Mount McKinley around 76' if i read it correctly. I really wish they would rename some of these natural monuments to their original native names. Judging by the reactions, some people evidently think Denali is also a muslim prayer or something Islamic... They are acting as if we blew up the carvings at Mount Rushmore. Also, I dislike Obama, but how does this make him a dictator?

Because he didn't make a constitutional amendment to change a mountain name in Alaska? Everyone knows you have to do that and it has to be ratified by all 13 colonies otherwise you're a tyrant!
Ah... Can't wait to hear about this around the grill tonight.
I need my own place, where I can be a "god-forsaken socialist" without reprisal.

Or do what I do, throw a bit of fuel into the fire. Whenever my Great Uncle comes around I know I can get some thoroughly entertaining rants out of him

There's a few around here in WA that will probably get their Native names back
however we did also say "fuck it" and use native names for most of our cities and many of the natural landmarks so it's possible that Obama will prioritize states that don't have a whole lot of native names.

Maybe we should change "Indiana"
Denali sounds so much nicer anyway. There was probably some Manifest Destiny motivation behind naming it after a president who had no connection to Alaska and apparently never saw the mountain.
