A spokesman for the director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said Snowden's case had been referred to the justice department and US intelligence was assessing the damage caused by the disclosures. There was no immediate reaction from the White House but Peter King, the chairman of the House homeland security subcommittee, called for Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong. Snowden flew there 10 days ago to disclose top-secret documents and to give interviews to the Guardian. The US has an extradition treaty with Hong Kong, but there are exclusions for political offences. The Republican head of the House intelligence committee, Mike Rogers, said Snowden had "released just enough information to literally be dangerous".
I'm hoping China's response is along the lines of "Fuck off".
"released just enough information to literally be dangerous"
What? [editline]9th June 2013[/editline]
I'm hoping China's response is along the lines of "Fuck off".
Not China, Hong Kong.
I'm hoping China's response is along the lines of "Fuck off".
Hong Kong is an independent country, China just handles its defense basically.
What?
If you remove the first 6 letters of his name and add 10 new ones, you can spell Osama bin Laden. Something like that isn't just a coincidence
Hong Kong is an independent country, China just handles its defense basically.
China still handles it's foreign policy though.
Christ, I wish Peter King wouldn't be reelected, but fat chance of that happening because of his (and now my!) district.
Not China, Hong Kong.

Beijing, which gave its consent for Hong Kong to sign the agreement, also has a right of veto if it believes the surrender of a fugitive would harm the "defence, foreign affairs or essential public interest or policy'' of the People's Republic of China. In short, the treaty makes Snowden's fate a matter of political expediency not just in Hong Kong but in Beijing
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/09/edward-snowden-hong-kong-gamble So they are able to stop the extradition if Hong Kong agrees with the US. Who knows what'll happen. I don't know if China's president is still in US, wonder if this topic may be brought up if he's still there.
I'm going to Hong Kong next week. I should find him and buy this guy a beer.
Fucking title says politicans. I hope no one notices
I'm going to Hong Kong next week. I should find him and buy this guy a beer.
just be sure to toss your cell into the garbage first, im 99.9% sure the NSA can use the camera as a directed energy weapon, fox tells me that they already record my calls so firing lasers out of the camera is not not possible
It's kind of like a movie where the government's top agent goes rogue and they can't catch him because he knows all their tricks
just be sure to toss your cell into the garbage first, im 99.9% sure the NSA can use the camera as a directed energy weapon, fox tells me that they already record my calls so firing lasers out of the camera is not not possible
Shit, they probably just tracked my post from my laptop right now. I'm going to be watched for the rest of the month. Wait no, the rest of my life. Just like before.
Calling for his extradition just makes them look even worse.
The people those politicians represent should call for their resignation for this.
Representative King also supports Terrorist as long as they're white so there's that. The guys fucking crazy.
Waaaah, now everyone knows we are fucking spying on them.
GlobalPost has a pretty awesome article on the Prism scandal, written as if it were happening in a foreign country
Human rights activists say revelations that the US regime has expanded its domestic surveillance program to private phone carriers is more evidence of the North American country’s pivot toward authoritarianism.
I'm going to call it. Snowden winds up dead in a tragic "accident" within five years.
He's fucked, he'll be executed in some "accident" soon.
Bradley Manning 2: Electric Boogaloo I love how the administration's immediate defense is "This isn't new, we've been doing it forever and nobody should be surprised" followed by "People will die because this was leaked!!!!!"
I'm hoping China's response is along the lines of "Fuck off".
It's probably going to be more like, "Fuck off... until we're done wringing your state secrets out of him, then you can have him."
He should have stole state secrets and fled to Moscow. Would have a better chance of living freely for the rest of his life. [editline]9th June 2013[/editline] Also for people who haven't seen it..
He should have stole state secrets and fled to Moscow. Would have a better chance of living freely for the rest of his life.
If you want to do something as dangerous as leak state secrets, the correct way to do it is covertly and make sure it's difficult or impossible to trace back to you. Proclaiming to the world you just committed treason is about the dumbest thing you can do, and just because you may be right, doesn't exempt you from harsh punishment or execution. Bradley Manning learned that the hard way and this guy is going down the same path. No amount of condemnation by the UN or harsh language blasted at the US is going to save this guy or Bradley manning.

While it's still "treason", Snowden just released things about the U.S. spying on its own citizens. I hope people won't just stand by while he's thrown in Guantanamo

I hope people won't just stand by while he's thrown in Guantanamo
Even the concept of Manning's leaks directly harming someone was quite a stretch; there's no way in hell that revealing a massive unconstitutional program that spies on Americans is actually going to hurt anything but the administration's shot-to-shit credibility. Just like with Manning, he made them look bad and now they'll go after him with everything they've got. Honestly, after the past month's revelations about the authoritarian bullshit the Obama administration is doing, I cannot wait to have him out of office in 2016. Maybe then, finally, we'll get someone in office that will shut down the global perpetual war and start RESTORING civil liberties for a change.
Too bad people won't give a shit until it's too late.
I don't know about you, but I'm joining a protest in Chicago on the 4th of July, how about you, doing anything about people not giving a shit?

In the governments' eyes, if you have the ability to uncover some of their dirty laundry, you have the ability to uncover more of it and they're going to do everything in their power to stop it. They're going to make an example of him to other people that might be contemplating doing the same thing. When you commit a crime as serious as treason, there's little that anyone can do to help him, especially since he was an idiot and confessed to doing it.

They were going to find him out because of either not showing up for work or some other dirty spy method. He should have fled to Russia, he would not have been touched and he likely would have gained citizenship in exchange for state secrets. He even mentioned that in the video, I don't know why he chose a country with a extradition treaty with the US.
