[release]It would appear that the three largest gaming companies supporting SOPA have quietly retracted their backing. Sony Electronics, Electronic Arts and Nintendo were all listed as supporters of the bill when it first came into being, but their names have since disappeared from the updated document of allies.
Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Nashville are still listed, but anything related to the company's electronics endeavors have disappeared.
However, all three companies are members of the Entertainment Software Association, a group that still remains aligned to SOPA. Although their individual express support of the bill has been removed, these companies still back it by virtue of their association with the ESA. Until the ESA backs off, these companies are still in. They ostensibly went from backing it twice to backing it once.
While it's great to see that companies are realizing SOPA support looks bad for them, simply hiding that support isn't quite as good as actively removing it. These three companies, along with every single publisher on this list, are still culpable for SOPA, and if they respect their audiences, they'd do well to stop.[/release]

Let's hope it's not just PR and the companies will motivate the ESA to oppose it as well.
Fantastic, glad to see EA isn't sucking turgid wieners for once. I'd really hate to see this bill pass.
EA, Nintendo, Sony makes awkward cough, sidesteps to the left.
this isnt good at all, they shouldn't be supporting it whatsoever. im glad they're taking some action, but with sopa their corporations will be ruined indefinetly. having any support at all is just greedy and short-sighted
This is how you get something done in this country. People bitched at me for saying that writing to their Congressmen was a waste of time and not going to do anything. It is, they wouldn't do anything, they don't care. So you have to go higher than them, and go after the people that buy those Congressmen.

Well, Anon's threatened to "destroy" Sony Online if they don't drop support for SOPA. And after this year's fiasco that cost them a shitton of money in damages (and also got them a few lawsuits), perhaps that will give them the proper motivation to drop all support.
Fear is a rather useful tactic when fighting big companies. Especially if you aim to hit them in the wallet.
uh no guys you gotta stop supporting it 100%!!!
I can't believe how all these corporations are throwing business strategy out the window. They stand to make some quick money when SOPA passes but they'll lose more in the long run when people start boycotting.

Well a corporation can't do much if it hasn't got customers.

This is not going to happen to any appreciable degree. These companies know SOPA will pass already, and are trying to lessen the PR blow that comes with supporting it.
I can't really understand why Nintendo would support this
I can't really understand why Nintendo would support this
You ever wonder why they were the last to switch away from cartridges?
And why the gamecube had the little disc?
You ever wonder why they were the last to switch away from cartridges?
Because cartridges had numerous advantages such as much faster reading speeds and being a well developed and established technology?
But other than that I get your point
And why the gamecube had the little disc?
This is a better example, there was no real reason why they should've used those smaller discs

Out of everyone in the world, Nintendo was the last I'd expect doing that. (supporting it at all I mean)
But I guess they're not that evil. Thank god.
Hey, I liked those little discs.
I've always liked cartridges more than discs.
Discs are fragile and can stop working upon a little bump or scratch. Plus there isnt the sound of the disc whirring.
Some more on the story
Nintendo, Electronic Arts and Sony Electronics — some of the largest video game companies in the world — have all pulled their support for an online bill that could encourage censorship online, according to an updated list of supporters of the bill.
Those three companies all supported the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) when it first entered Congress, according to a report from Joystiq in November.
SOPA, along with the PROTECT IP act in the Senate, give content-producing companies the right to order a take down for a website that they believe is infringing on a copyright. If you even host links to content that infringes on a copyright, you have to take it down.
If not, the copyright owner can request that the infringing site has its advertising and transaction revenue cut off. Or it can request that a domain name — like businessinsider.com — be blacklisted and rendered inaccessible.

As a kid, the joy of slapping the cartridge in like some sort of rifle magazine and hearing the familiar clack

Actually yes.
Someone just played whistleblower.

You did it Anonymous!

That was one of their numerous advantages over discs, they had much more durability, though the disadvantages were higher manufacturing costs and lower data capacity
One more thing about why Nintendo supported SOPA.
Back in the days of the Famicom, when it was released on the Famicom Disk System, they suffered from massive piracy, hence their support of proprietary cartridges and disks.
uh no guys you gotta stop supporting it 100%!!!
well, they did stop supporting it 100%, they support it 50% now.
100% PR move. All they did was drop "official" support to make themselves look good.
I'm not content before ALL support of SOPA is gone.
