I don't know if the stay has been heard and decided yet. Ask your dad if it's the will of the people to block the federal constitution from upholding equal protection under the law. Because that's what he's saying it is.

Fuck. We had a vice presidential candidate in 2008 who thought that the Vice President had powers equal to or greater than the President. The only powers of the VP in the US are to be a tie-breaker in the Senate, and to step up if the President dies.

There is, in fact, a very good reason for this. If the judge's ruling is overturned on appeal, anyone who got gay married immediately after the judge declared it legal is then unintentionally in a fraudulent marriage. Given the huge amount of paperwork and formal changes that tend to occur with a marriage (combining medical benefits and tax returns, sharing bank accounts and property, etc.) this is potentially a giant clusterfuck in the making. Utah's having to deal with a couple thousand Shrodinger's Marriages because they were slow on this. It's a real problem.
