Google Inc. plans to make its self-driving cars unit, which will offer rides for hire, a stand-alone business under the Alphabet Inc. corporate umbrella next year, a person briefed on the company’s strategy said.
Google’s autonomous vehicles have logged more than 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) on public roads, mostly around San Francisco and Austin, Texas, making these cities logical places for launching a service, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. The fleets •-- which would include a range of large and small vehicles -- could be deployed first in confined areas like college campuses, military bases or corporate office parks, the person said.
The race to develop a self-driving vehicle fleet has intensified since February when Bloomberg reported that Google was developing a rival to Uber Technologies Inc., most likely in conjunction with its driverless-car project. Uber is pursuing its own autonomous capabilities, while automakers are deploying semi-autonomous technologies and experimenting with so-called shared mobility.
alphabet seems like the sketchiest name for a company

Taxi drivers better start looking for different job opportunities ASAP.
As a liability move it makes sense

Uber and now this. Taxi drivers have been fucked in the ass pretty hard this year.
I thought the cars were part of x with the earlier split, not google. Also this is a leak, right?

I think it makes abit of sense if you look at this:

that's a great idea except for the fact that like 4 of the letters are retired products
I have a real question here...
What happens if a police officer decides to pull over the car?
First, would the car know how?
Second, who gets the ticket/appear in court?

Well the image is quite outdated actually.

I'm not sure how does a self driving car will get a speeding ticket since it's suppose to follow traffic rules.

OR...it could be seen as they're remembering they're history and how they came to be what they are today......thats NOT a bad thing.

Google can start a renewable power utility and call it "Google Juice"
A great investment opportunity if you've got the money laying around.
alphabet, delphi and mobileye Are going to rake in the cash in a few years from driverless cars.
Can't believe taxi drivers are finally going to become dinosaurs.

One of Google's self-driving cars was pulled over for driving too slowly and impeding traffic
Didn't get a ticket cause there was nobody to give a ticket to
Taxi drivers better start looking for different job opportunities ASAP.
Any job that requires a human behind the wheel of a vehicle going from A to B won't exist in a few decades.
I'm going to hold out for self-driving horses.

Some big cities*
In NY and LA it's impossible to drive with any sort of speed but here in lisbon any car being limited to 25mph (40 kph) would be sin, that would mean no travelling along some of the city's main arteries without holding up everybody
It's enough for the thin side streets and some of the more congestioned areas at best
Uber and now this. Taxi drivers have been fucked in the ass pretty hard this year.
Yeah but they deserve it 99% of the taxi drivers I've ridden with are ass holes. Taxi wasn't very clean and overpriced. I welcome this new technology with open arms :)

An interesting change to all previous years where the taxi drivers were the ones doing the fucking.

Depends on where you are. Uber seems to be an urban-focused thing. I looked it up for shits and giggles, and got nothing for Uber.

Because the cars are totally going to be limited to 25mph forever.

it won't be like that forever, you know

The speed limitation wasn't because of tech, it was partially safety and partially branding.
