• Got an old 1st gen iPod Nano? Apple wants to replace it for FREE, warns it could possibly catch fire
Do you have an old first-generation iPod Nano lying around? If so, Apple wants to replace it for you, 5 years after you bought it. Such a deal. But watch out: There’s a slight risk of your old Nano overheating, and possibly even catching on fire because of a defective battery. Apple says if you own one of the Nanos with this problem, you should stop using it immediately. The good news is, newer iPods aren’t affected by the battery defect. Writes the company on its website: “Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod Nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.” Apple’s providing a place to check your Nano’s serial numbers and order a “replacement unit.” So far, it’s unclear exactly what Apple will send you if you have the correct serial number on your old Nano. We presume the company wouldn’t dig up old iPod Nanos from the distant past, nor would it swap out the batteries in the one you have now. So if our guess is correct, you’ll be able to trade in that old beat-up and scratched-up iPod for a shiny new one. We’ve contacted the company to find out, but we can’t imagine Apple sending anything but the latest Nano. UPDATE: Alas, it is not to be. You’ll be getting first-generation iPod Nanos as replacements
Source
Who still owns a 1st gen iPod Nano away?
Oh shit I think I got one of these for free lying around somewhere FUCK nvm it's a 1st gen shuffle, only ipod I ever owned longer than 2 days.
What about iPod minis?
That's kind of them, but why replace it with a 1st Gen and not something better? edit: never mind, having read it they'll replace it with the new nano. That's good. edit2: okay, now that it's updated, the first question still stands.
I think I have one of those it's just lying on the floor somewhere
Rock on! I still have one somewhere. I wonder what you get in exchange? a iPod of equal or lesser value? Edit: dammit, you get a refurbished one.
It got hot as hell a lot of the time so I'm not surprised.
too bad i smashed mine i would get it replaced and sell it
Rock on! I still have one somewhere. I wonder what you get in exchange? a iPod of equal or lesser value?
Just a replacement iPod Nano
gave one to my friend ima buy it back right now such a fiend i am
Who still owns a 1st gen iPod Nano away?
My mate has one. He could never afford another so he was ecstatic when I told him about this.
I still have one of those older regular iPods, it's got about 80gb on it so I've never really been bothered to replace it.
too bad i smashed mine i would get it replaced and sell it
Same here. Mine stopped working on me so at the time I thought the best solution was to just break it open to see what it looks like inside. I could have gotten me a free replacement, shiat. I still have the broken pieces though, maybe if I send it in I can still get a replacement. [editline].[/editline] I'm going to contact support to see if I can send in the pieces of my broken 1st Gen Nano for a replacement. Last year I was on Ebay looking for the 1st Gen because I miss the days I used my little Nano on the bus to school. [editline].[/editline] Sweet, I entered the serial number on their recall page and Apple is going to send me a box so I can ship the Nano to them. I hope they don't mind it's in a few pieces. I am able to squeeze it to close it together though. I think I have to wait for them to confirm the serial first.
Sent off for a replacement 2gb white, it still gets some use even to this day after we bought it back in Christmas 2005 - although with phones slowly taking over, the iPod has basically become defunct unless you JUST want music. By the way: Apple will most likely be testing these for mechanical / firmware defects, so don't hold much hope for getting a refurbished model (or even your original back at all) if it's been dunked in a lake / has RockBox on it
i still got mine, i wonder if they'll still replace it even though it doesn't work
Who still owns a 1st gen iPod Nano away?
I still have mine from when I replaced it with a 1st gen Zune. :v:
i still got mine, i wonder if they'll still replace it even though it doesn't work
Just tell them the battery overheated.
UPDATE: Alas, it is not to be. You’ll be getting first-generation iPod Nanos as replacements
Didn't expect anything else from Apple. I wouldn't put it past them to start manufacturing new 1st gens, just to avoid giving them the latest one for free.
Some dipshit stole my 1st generation iPod nano a couple of years ago in college. I hope it burns him.
I think I may have one. I haven't used it in a while though.
Goddammit mine is 2nd gen.
im not sure if i have a second or first generation ipod nano...
I still have mine, not caught fire yet. Soldier on iPod!
Just filled it out. They are going to send a box to my house to send the ipod in.
