This looks so improved I wouldn't even call it a Remaster - Grim Fandango Remastered levels of improvements is what I think of when I hear the word Remaster. This looks like a full on remake.
The over-exaggerated animations with picking up stuff is really stupid. I hate the over-importance of animations over practicality and pacing of gameplay. It makes it seem like they want shit to look cool as opposed to play cool. Really, that can extend out to the entire presentation of the game and all the gameplay that's there. I'm gonna need more gameplay shown before I can say this looks all that great. As it stands, it looks boring, but I can give some leeway since it's seemingly a demo that shows off the first level or whatever. Gotta show off more gameplay features.
my god between the aim and how many times they get hit, this player doesn't seem too good i will say it's very pretty tho, an amazing improvement; i never played system shock but this is impressive is combat really so egregious in not letting you strafe away from hits or did the demo-er just not care

[editline]edit[/editline] U bloody Ninja.

It had fancy animations for secrets and such but they were super quick and were out of the way fast. In this the animation looks to be literally 9-10 seconds long. For an item pick up. That's awful and it was one of the first things I picked up on watching this. They did a good job with the environment though.
As someone who has been wanting to get into the series, would this Remaster be a good starting point once it is released?
As someone who has been wanting to get into the series, would this Remaster be a good starting point once it is released?
Who knows, probably. System Shock 2 is great if you don't mind it's age.
Lacks the energy of the original that only a 90's DOS game could emit, but I don't mind the tradeoff for the modern styling.
Who knows, probably. System Shock 2 is great if you don't mind it's age.
System Shock 2, (for me at least) was a lot accessible and easier to play than SS1 both are fantastic games
Did System Shock 1 have co-op like the second one btw? And does anyone know if this remaster will have it?
Ragdoll physics?
Those pick up animations got really annoying really fast. It's alright to have it long for the very first time you pick something important up. But after that make it very quick hand swipes like in Dying Light.
I think the biggest flaw of remaking a 94' game is that the level design and geometry is so bland and primitive. Everything else looks really nice, but the level design bugs me. System Shock 2 was mostly made up of corridors as well, but they had the technology by then to not rely on such primitive shapes.
I wonder why
I'm sick of it at this point. They're all writers which you'd think would make sense. But it's like a cyclist who can't drive reviewing fucking cars.

I'm not really sure how to feel about this, but I'll blame that on the demo. Nothing about the game was really showcased except for the environments, which admittedly look really good, and I'm glad to see that we still get claustrophobic labyrinths. The major drawback is that there's not really any setpieces in the environment, but it is a space station. The other issue is the overall blockiness of the level architecture. Gah, I really want to love this but I'm just not all that moved by what I saw. I think it would have been a much better idea to remake SS2, which IMO has far more issues than SS1. Hopefully things get a bit more interesting once the kickstarter funds start coming in. [editline].[/editline] That said I really hope this project isn't scrapped. A SS1 remake is one of those things that just seems too good to be true.
It's a shame they're sticking to the original level geometry so heavily when they're putting so much effort into everything else. The cheap tile-based, grid-like layouts lack setpieces and make it look like an FPSCreator game at points. At the same time, I kind of like that they're staying super true to the source material, though. I won't feel guilty about playing this without having played SS1.

Our SS Remake demo? Is he working on SS Remake?
Our SS Remake demo? Is he working on SS Remake?
Yup, he's one of their animators, if I remember right.

MaxofS2D saying something bad about Polygon? Never thought I'd see the day.
Yup, he's one of their animators, if I remember right.
Ah. Anyway I hope they slow down the Hand animations. Really annoying.

Huh, so that's what happened to Max.
I hope they brush up or do System Shock 2 sometime later, that game would be hella scary with modern lighting and graphics
Those pick up animations got really annoying really fast. It's alright to have it long for the very first time you pick something important up. But after that make it very quick hand swipes like in Dying Light.
It makes sense at the very least for the beginning, since you're picking up your basic HUD and interface stuff while listening to a transmission, so it's really just setup, even if drawn out. If it kept happening over the course of the game though, for important upgrades or not, it'd be really.. bad.
It's a shame they're sticking to the original level geometry so heavily when they're putting so much effort into everything else. The bigger question is how the more organic or lived-in areas will look.
played quite a bit of the enhanced edition, will def check out this remake

They can't even get people who can write better.
Anyone else missing the scary voices of the Hybrids?
As someone who never played the first game but loves System Shock 2, how similar/different are they? The remake wasn't really on my radar but this looks pretty good.
