[release] Environmental activists have broken into a French nuclear power station, to highlight the "vulnerability" of atomic sites in France. Greenpeace campaigners entered the site at Nogent-sur-Seine, 60 miles (95km) south-east of Paris, before dawn. The activists climbed on top of a reactor building and unfurled a banner, said a Greenpeace spokesman. The power company, Electricite de France (EDF), says the intruders were detected straight away. Seven out of nine activists who entered the site have been arrested, said the firm. The activists "were immediately detected by the security system and were permanently followed on the site, without a decision being made to make use of force," said an EDF statement. Greenpeace also targeted two other nuclear sites in France at the same time. Banners were unfurled at those sites, say police, but it is not clear whether the activists managed to gain entry. The campaign group says it did succeed in putting up a banner on the Nogent-sur-Seine plant which read "Safe Nuclear Power Doesn't Exist". "The aim is to show the vulnerability of French nuclear installations and how easy it is to get to the heart of a nuclear reactor," said a Greenpeace nuclear specialist, Sophia Majnoni. 'Irresponsible' actionFrench Industry Minister Eric Besson expressed surprise when told of reports about the Greenpeace action. "That would mean there has been a dysfunction and that measures must be taken to ensure that it doesn't happen again," he told French radio. An advisor to President Nicolas Sarkozy, Henri Guaino, said the Greenpeace action was "irresponsible", but acknowledged that it raised concerns. "This does make one think about the security of access to nuclear power plants," French news agency AFP reported him as saying. The future of the nuclear industry has sparked heated political exchanges in the run up to next year's presidential elections. The opposition socialists say they want to reduce the country's dependence on nuclear power, but the French government has accused them of undermining the industry to win Green party support. Greenpeace has repeatedly targeted the French nuclear industry over safety concerns.[/release] http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16029572 Why don't they bother Fukushima instead
Why doesn't Greenpeace just fuck off and leave the intelligent world alone?
Greenpeace give environmentalists a bad name
She said a recent security audit of French nuclear plants "did not learn the lessons of Fukushima," the Japanese nuclear plant crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in March.
Yeah, like France is located in an earthquake/tsunami zone. Do they know that the meltdown was caused because of the tsunami?
Yeah, like France is located in an earthquake/tsunami zone. Do they know that the meltdown was caused because of the tsunami?
All they care about is that a meltdown occured, not what caused the meltdown. It's selective ignorance at it's finest.
All they care about is that a meltdown occured, not what caused the meltdown. It's selective ignorance at it's finest.
WELL, France has... uhh... molten cheese! That shit is dangerous, I can see it chewing right through the reactor block and causing a radiation leak!
There are better ways of proving the insecurity of a nuclear reactor than climbing the building housing it and unfurling a banner.
Environmental activists have broken into a French nuclear power station, to highlight the "vulnerability" of atomic sites in France.

the intruders were detected straight away.
Yup. Proved your point alright.
Fuck off greenpeace, we can take care of our own shit. Seriously, I don't like the fact most of our energy comes from nuclear plants, but I'm not trying to change things all of a sudden, that just doesn't work. It takes time and effort plus a lot of time to initiate a good transition from nuclear to a proper energy source, stop trying to hurry things up you morons...
Why don't they bother Fukushima instead
Better yet, just leave nuclear power alone together.
What's a proper energy source?
Something that gets less bullshit from idiot groups like Greenpeace.
Something that gets less bullshit from idiot groups like Greenpeace.
and is also vaguely practical? good luck
Greenpeace please. As long as we haven't filled the entire Sahara desert with solar panels, nuclear power will have to be the temporary fix for us Europeans.
Greenpeace please. As long as we haven't filled the entire Sahara desert with solar panels, nuclear power will have to be the temporary fix for us Europeans.
Do it :v:

Matter of fact, it's one of the safest, if not the safest, that mankind has ever devised. Now we just need to start building some thorium reactors and we'll be golden.
Yeah, like France is located in an earthquake/tsunami zone. Do they know that the meltdown was caused because of the tsunami?
And that the nuclear power company cut corners and the risk was known since the early 90s. [editline]6th December 2011[/editline] What would they have preferred? To be shot on sight so they could claim that the security forces used excessive force?
Once we get fusion stable, things will be kinda rosy power-wise (provided that none blow up, but I doubt that they do.) But greenpeace and the like would still try and stop it.
There are better ways of proving the insecurity of a nuclear reactor than climbing the building housing it and unfurling a banner.
Their plan didn't even work since apparently security recognized who they were and where they were going, and simply shadowed the group the entire time.
It's like they want us to live in the dark ages.
If it was up to them we'd still be living in caves.
The activists climbed on top of a reactor building and unfurled a banner
If they stayed up there long enough we could of had the snipers help bring them down in an artistic display of ragdoll physics.
Yeah, like France is located in an earthquake/tsunami zone. Do they know that the meltdown was caused because of the tsunami?
And the fact that the Fukushima plant was over 40 years old.

Dammit Greenpeace go back to wistleblowing important things and stop being stupid.
So fine, if the plant is too easy to get into, just have the guards shoot every trespasser on sight? Oh wait, but that would be excessive force.
Greenpeace give environmentalists a bad name
I know the feel bro. I'm Christian.
We should just use solar panels. Why build reactors when there's a giant one in the sky?
Greenpeace please. As long as we haven't filled the entire Sahara desert with solar panels, nuclear power will have to be the temporary fix for us Europeans.
Solution: use the nuclear stuff from the nuclear power plants to glass the Sahara desert to use as a solar panel. :v:
So the greenpeace activists proved that an earthquake could get off its lazy butt and walk right into the reactor if it wanted? I do like that the plant personnel didn't consider them a threat while monitering, and that they (the activists) then considered it a succesful operation.
