Wildlife rangers have shot dead five suspected ivory poachers during a gun battle in western Kenya.
Two rangers were hurt during the battle in West Pokot county, said officials from Kenya's Wildlife Service (KWS).
They said 50kg (110lb) of elephant tusks and AK-47 rifles were recovered.
Kenya has recently taken a more aggressive stance against poaching as it combats a surge in demand for ivory from Asia in spite a long-standing ban on the international trade.
KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said on Saturday that rangers were determined to make poaching "a high-cost, low-benefit activity".
The KWS says about 100 elephants are killed each year in Kenya by poachers.
Ivory from elephants is often smuggled to Asia for the use in ornaments, while rhino horns are used in traditional medicine.
I'm glad they're taking the problem seriously.
Ivory poachers are fucking terrible, but their deaths are sad regardless. Wish they'd been arrested instead. Glad the authorities are taking the problem seriously though.
EDIT: I think you guys might've misunderstood; I'm not saying it's possible, I just wish it was possible to bring them in alive.
hooah!
Good.

How? they are hunting down endangered animals for their parts for stupid Chinese medicines that actually do nothing, they are aware that it's illegal. The park ranger isn't just going to walk up do them and be like "Sir, could you not do that please". Because he is going to get shot at, so naturally the rangers are going to shoot back. Also with the death policy for poachers in a wildlife park its pretty much a no boner.
I don't think you people realize what it's like living in Kenya. These people don't just do this shit because it's fun or easy, but because they're poor as shit. There is nothing to celebrate.

Well think of it this way: 5 less people have a miserable life now

Not saying they should, just saying it'd be the ideal scenario. Understandably it's not possible.

If the rangers recovered AK-47 rifles from the poachers, I doubt that they're skimping on meals.

I must say the thought of a death policy for poachers doesn't give me an erection either

All the guy was saying was that its better to arrest people rather than killing them when possible. What the hell is wrong with that?
Sure lets just shoot anyone who kills an animal.
It's the fact that they were carrying assualt rifles and would've gunned down anyone who tried to get in the way
Plus they're most likely the ones who started shooting first
I think you people need to actually read the article, it says they were killed in a gun battle, and they weren't just executed. So they probably opened fire on the rangers.
Uh they were probably shot at during the gun battle the article states.
Whether the Rangers just showed up and started shooting or returned fire in self defense is unknown and will probably never be known. But I sure ain't crying about a bunch of poachers being shot trying to kill endangered elephants for a buck.

Name fits thread.

AK-47s are cheap in those parts.

I was about to post that damnit.
Even though I do not welcome killing, I welcome the will to stop the killing of elephants out of greed.

you realize the sheer amount of AK's the soviet union shipped out to countries like kenya and general any third-world country mean that the market is saturated with hundreds of thousands of them?

People who resort to trafficking in illegal substances, unless they're the heads of some organized crime family, are very poor people who have no other recourse. I'm fully in favour of ending the ivory trade, but I feel sorry for the people who are forced to poach.
about time we started poaching poachers
I'd rather see the stupid people who BUY ivory getting into trouble.
in before disney channel movie of this
Poachers fucking shit up
rangers step in and fuck them up
True story yo
Kill people just trying to provide for their families or something (maybe) over some animals
yes.
Kill people just trying to provide for their families or something (maybe) over some animals

They were more than likely killed for shooting at the rangers.
Kill people just trying to provide for their families or something (maybe) over some animals

They were trying to provide yes, but that doesn't justify that what they were doing is illegal.
They died because they were armed poachers who couldn't be approached by the law peacefully.
Kill people just trying to provide for their families or something (maybe) over some animals

because wildlife rangers are known for their ruthless killing sprees, brutally murdering and displaying the bodies of every person they find poaching regardless of the innocent poachers always laying down arms and begging for mercy
Facepunch is surprisingly swift in changing it's view on the value of human life.
