SHIELD tablet is 8 inch device with 1920×1200 resolution. It has 2GB RAM, Tegra K1 SoC with 192 CUDA cores, QuadCore 2.2 GHz A15 CPU. Tablet has dual speakers and 5 MPIX ‘selfie’ camera.
The SHIELD tablet will be available in two versions, the cheaper 16GB model costs $299 and it only has WIFI connection. NVIDIA will ask you for $100 more if you decide to get a 32GB model with LTE modem on board. The SHIELD controller costs $59, however I cannot confirm yet if it works with other devices (if it does, my XBOX360 controller will be thrown out of the window in a matter of seconds).
I think it looks really cool. Plus, those front facing speakers...
Some rather impressive specs, but I sorta wish they would beef up/tone-down-the-price on the original Shield instead.
The Razor tablet was a flop because it was too heavy, bulky, and has shit battery life.
This ad says nothing about those points, I'm concerned.

The article has two pictures that show all of that.

I want this this, seems to have a nice stylus for art i think, and decent specs for games, but what kind of games can we play on it, just android stuff or can we pop in some kind of pc games to actually use those impressive specs included in the device?
10 hour HD video playback? For that price this seems like a great deal even for just a portable tv. Wonder if you are forced to use nvidia controller or can I use a different usb one?

I'm pretty sure you can use any controller you want to as long as it's compatible with android in general. If you were to use a USB one though you'd need an OTG because this only has micro USB.

I mean, the original Shield was heavy and bulky, but it was a powerful device and had way more battery life than your wrists had strength to hold it up (near 10 hours of screen-on time, I hear) and was comfy to use.
Nvidia does hardware design pretty alright.

May or may not run as good as this at the tablets resolution, but the future is now
This is a far better idea than a hideous handheld.
I don't give a damn about it unless it has Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury reading out the menus to me.
Goddamn it, I don't want a tablet if I'm going to be leaving it connected to the television. Give me a console minus the screen hardware. All I want to do is stream my games to the living room television and currently Shield is the only option for this.
Steam needs to support streaming, like seriously, the app has gone untouched since 2012.
But who saved PC gaming?

Try this, it makes your PC recognize your android device as a Shield, it's kinda buggy and slow though unless your device is really good.
Also you need a controller.

Buy a case that covers the screen and pretend it doesn't have a screen if it bothers you so much.

Haven't they recently allowed you to stream games from one pc to another if they're on the same router?
Kinda awkward to have a separate controller with it.
Takes a lot of the portability away, now you need to carry around 2 devices and need a table to put the tablet on while you use it.

Waste of energy and it still doesn't have the hardware needed (ethernet is pretty much required for gameplay streaming). There's a huge market for a box that can do Popcorn Time/Netflix/Hulu/HBO Go/Showtime On Demand/emulation for any console you can think of. For a PC to do that, it's much more expensive, you have to build it, it's not optimized for the television and it's just not viable for a lot of consumers. Nvidia has the capability to fulfill this market and god knows why they haven't.

Yes, but why pay $300-400 in X86 hardware when an Android box would give similar or even better performance and it'd be optimized for the form factor it's being used on. A $99 Android box can easily decode and process 1080P/1440P/4K gaming.

If it's not cycle accurate (which it's not) who cares.

You still get to play a fun game?

is this really what we're going to be calling front-facing cameras now
Day 0 purchase for me. I've had the original Shield since it launched last summer and it's one of the best portable devices I've used. The inclusion of DirectStylus in the new Shield really makes it a good selling point for me. I like to draw and I hate the fat nub stylus that is usually associated with capacitive touch screens. I sort of like that you have the option to tote it around as just a tablet or use a controller if you really want to game on it. This makes it an excellent gaming AND productivity device.
Shield Tablet 32gb LTE + 128gb SD + Controller + Cover here I come!

everyone who likes fun games and isn't a laughable sperg

Half-life 2
The problem is that tablets like these are a rather niche market. It isn't like you can bring it out with you in public and start playing games, because you'll need the controller to do so properly. So really, the only situation where you can sit down and play with the controller will be at home, at which point you're better off using your desktop PC anyway.
I am glad, however, that NVIDIA are releasing these gaming-oriented devices. With this and Source on Android we might start seeing some mainstream Android support, and as a result of that, possibly Linux.

hang on a minute i somehow didn't see that it was $300 and 390 grams disregard everything i just said
this is awesome

Saying "selfie camera" is shorter than "front-facing camera", therefor it's more convenient

When we'll be able to get something comparable to the Razor Pro, for that price/weight/form-factor. Then i'd maybe consider buying something like that.
I really hope they still have plans on updating the shield. That tablet setup is no where near as portable as the shield. Personally, I have no issues with the weight of the device. Yes it doesn't fit in your pocket but that is a whole lot better than the alternative they are presenting here. Hopefully it is an alternative and not a replacement.
Hmm, to buy it or not to buy it. Since I already have the Shield, I will probably skip this one and get the third Shield generation.
I've never seen the need for a tablet, but now as I age and will be on the go much more it doesn't seem like a terrible idea. I liked the EVGA Tegra Note for its industrial design and decent price, and I'm liking the sounds of this one too.
What do you guys like the most about your tablets?
