The priority is to have a new text, but contestants will also be free to compose a new tune, project leader Lukas Niederberger told BBC News. The current text dates back to 1841 and includes references to God, prayer, mountains and sunshine. The new text is to include values enshrined in the Swiss constitution, such as democracy and solidarity.
This could make for an interesting anthem
Well, that's an interesting use of Democracy that will inevitably end badly. Good intention though.
It better be composed by Eluveitie

But I like God, prayer, mountains and sunshine.
But I like God, prayer, mountains and sunshine.
Mountains and sunshine are consistently rated highly among Good Things. God and prayer however are hotly contested.
Mountains and sunshine are consistently rated highly among Good Things. God and prayer however are hotly contested.
Mountains are pretty cool but sunshine is overrated.
everythings terrible make it instrumental
I approve.
You know we wouldn't need any changes to the anthem if the Habsburgs took over the universe like they were destined to do before I was forced back in time against my will. I mean look at what we're missing out on!
Mountains and sunshine are consistently rated highly among Good Things. God and prayer however are hotly contested.
But we actually do have a lot of mountains and sunshine :v:
UK needs a new one too "God Save the Queen"
UK needs a new one too "God Save the Queen"
God Save the Parliament
God Save the Parliament
Army protect the queen
Seeing as Ireland's one pretty much consists of soldiers waiting to go kill the British, we should probably change it, but there would be bloody murder if anyone tried.
Mountains and sunshine are consistently rated highly among Good Things. God and prayer however are hotly contested.
What if we replaced God and prayer with cheese and absinthe?
Mountains and sunshine are consistently rated highly among Good Things. God and prayer however are hotly contested.
Mountains and sunshine team up to create deserts and deserts kill people God probably doesn't exist so he never killed anyone God is better QED
When the morning skies grow red And o'er their radiance shed, Thou, O Sagan, appeareth in their light. When the Alps glow bright with the reflection of photons from snow Pray to NDT, to Science surrender, For you analyze and logically understand, For you analyze and logically understand, That he does not dwelleth in this land. That he does not dwelleth in this land. In the sunset Thou art nigh And beyond the starry sky, Thou, O logical Science, ever near When to Cosmos we are departing, Joy and bliss atheists'll be imparting, For we analyze and logically understand For we analyze and logically understand That Thou does not dwellest in this land. That Thou does not dwellest in this land. The peasants at /r/atheism rejoice
The peasants at /r/atheism rejoice
This is a step in the right direction, but you can't forget that Switzerland is only 20% atheist and thus, as the sole beacon of light in a world of ignorant stupid theists, our community should only give them 20% of our respect. I'll make a sheltered suburban mom meme out of it if you don't understand my logical evaluation of basic percentages.
I honestly don't see the need for a change and I don't get all the winners this is getting. I don't think we should really change an anthem that's close to home for the Swiss peoples just because we're moving more towards secular values, it's not like refusing to mention God will magically make everyone forget what religion is. I'm not one to mind these references to God and such as they can be beautiful as long as its not a forceful indoctrination, and I think changing it will cause many pointless arguments.
There's a similar debate going on about the swedish debate. god is only mentioned once but that's not what everyone's having an issue with. It's that our anthem seems to glorify Swedens great empire days. a time that was pretty darn bad for everyone that was not filthy rich. Changing an anthem like that seems wonky though! there's probably gonna be a whole lot confusion on sport events when the anthem is sung. half of them will conform to the new anthem, the rest will keep singing the old one because "you don't step on MY pride and values!!

Luckily the last stanza made no claims and now they use that.
I think the issue is more that the anthem consists of how god is there when the sun comes up, the sun sets, when it is misty or when it is stormy. For me it doesn't really represent switzerland or my values as a swiss citizen. It would be hilarious if it was a wub wub anthem.
imo it should be kept as is just for history's sake.
imo it should be kept as is just for history's sake.
The swiss psalm is only officialy the national anthem since 1961, hardly that historical.
UK needs a new one too "God Save the Queen"
Rule, Britannia! Why would it be replaced with anything else?
