Today has been full of good news for the music industry — we just heard that revenues grew for the first time since 1999, and now an NPD study claims that free streaming services are helping to reduce peer-to-peer music sharing. According to NPD's survey, the number of consumer using P2P services to download music dropped 17 percent in 2012 compared to the year prior.
Spotify is pretty great, even for free users, and it's worth the money for premium, too.

I feel its only worth the money if your phone that may be running it has an unlimited data plan. If that was the case for me I would definitely use spotify premium.
Perhaps all those people saying that convenience and service will stop piracy, might be right?
There is a reason people pirate things. It's way too easy compared to conventional options. It's easier for me to buy a game on steam and download it than try to find a pirate copy. Which is why steam does so well.

Offline mode.
Create a playlist with all the songs you could ever want in it, download it through wifi, turn spotify to offline mode and enjoy your new mp3 library
Who the hell uses P2P anymore ? I'm not surprised it's dropping.

I am going to guess you don't know that torrents are p2p.

Spotify is more convenient than piracy by a long shot.
If I pirate something, I need to know what I want to listen to, the name of the song/album and band, where to find it, I need to check if it's decent quality and not a fake torrent, download it to a drive, and then I can play it.
With Spotify, you can pick one song you like, right click, start radio, it starts play things similar to that. Simple.
i'll be glad when more publishers make the mass exodus to streaming services like netflix, spotify, or last.fm
they're good services, but some feel lackluster and leave more to be desired
i was pissed as hell when Netflix removed a good majority of certain films - blade runner, alien, old star trek films, what the hell dude
and when is adult swim coming to netflix
if you provide a better service than piracy, people will have no reason to pirate
I love soundcloud.com

Well, unless they just plain don't want to spend any money.
Spotify is currently not available in your country.
After a year still nope
Well, unless they just plain don't want to spend any money.
or can't spend it

Valid for public sites. For private sites, not as much since they tend to be massively obsessive about QA, and have related artist webs.
Still, this is progress towards an actual workable business model, and you can't knock that. Difficult to find content (not everything is on services like this yet, though massive strides have been made), archival (lossless) formats, and early leaks are some of the few reasons left to bother with music piracy.
It's not 'there' just yet, but these services are getting really dang close.
Spotify is a great streaming service. I rarely pirate music anymore unless I want it on the go, and usually I end up buying the album anyway.

spotify is great even as a free user though
Spotify has too many commercials

Their adverts are really fucking annoying, or I'd still be using the free version.

This really isnt true to be honest.
You need the name of the artist if you just want his stuff, or the album. (Which isnt much considering you would have to know that anyway.) Then you go on a trusted site, which isnt hard to find, and find the torrent with the most reliability, which is usually the top downloaded. Most torrents with malware is removed extremely fast from reliable sites.
Not condoning piracy, but it really is super easy to get what you want if you know what you want.
Spotify is the best way to get free music on demand because you can get pretty much any complete album.
I prefer to have the music on my hard drive though, so I can put it on other devices. I still buy cheap cds for the hard copy.
Now if only any of those services were in Russia. AFAIK we only have iTunes, but it's missing lots of stuff..

pretty cool service
Grooveshark is pretty good, and its free.
I dont use any of those services. I dont really understand them that much. If somebody could explain what exactly does Spotifly do, that be great. But i think if you want to help stop piracy (although it will never end) then lower the prices of cds and such. I never use to buy music but then Google Play started having so many good deals on music that i bought them.

Streams music. You search for an artist and can instantly play any song. Related artists, playlists, local music too. It's a really great service.
The point of Spotify and the rise of low-storage superphones is using the Cloud for most things instead of storing in the device
Using the cloud is really easy when your limited to 1gb of bandwidth, or pay a ton for unlimited.
And works well when the cell signal drops out.
yes, a free and more convenient service stopped a free and less convenient service
either way, i enjoy the fuck out of spotify
to people saying "too many ads", wow, be happy with what you have jesus, thats the only way they make money off free users

not easier than spotify? especially for finding songs that you like, with the radio feature
i have yet to find a song that hasn't been on spotify that i wanted to listen to
spotify is great even as a free user though
Agreed. From a desktop you can listen to anything you want as many times as you want, and make playlists for them. You can even add a whole album as a playlist. There's just short ads that play every now and then. There's also radio which is great for listening to similar music nonstop. Plus there's the social features anyone can use. Paying gives you the extra features like listening on mobile devices. It's a really reasonable service.
I don't even have a torrent client installed anymore
