Ford chief executive Mark Fields said Tuesday the automaker was ditching its plans to open a factory in Mexico and instead expanding a Michigan plant, creating 700 more local jobs.
The next wave of workers in Flat Rock will build mostly self-driving and electric cars, including a hybrid Mustang. Unlike manufacturing roles of decades past, though, the jobs will probably require computer literacy and more than a high school degree.
“The era of the electric vehicle is dawning,” Fields "]told his employees this week, “and we at Ford plan to be a leader in this exciting future.”
The new employment opportunities — the tickets to the middle class — will not look like the old ones. Economists say auto manufacturing at Ford and beyond will become increasingly automated, resulting in fewer jobs for more highly skilled workers.
Ford’s move became political after Fields expressed confidence in the business climate under President-elect Donald Trump, and Trump on Twitter took credit for the company’s decision. Both men invoked the importance of protecting American jobs.
Analysts, though, say Ford’s decision stemmed more from its long-term goals than the new administration or devotion to U.S. workers. The company aims to invest $4.5 billion in electric vehicles by 2020. (The company would not comment on the specifics of the 700 new positions.)

People bitch about college degrees being devalued because the push for everyone to go to college causing a glut of overeducated people, and then a plant like this opens up that is going to require a lot of educated and skilled workers this is somehow a bad thing? This is great news around.
You know i've always wonder why countries just don't buy theses planets and begin producing their own cars after automakers jumpship.

Nobody said it was a bad thing; they demonstrated how it undermines claims by our incoming president as part of what has become a theme with him.
This doesn't really say anything new that the previous thread hadn't discussed, though
I like how they had to make news out of this so people would stop being stupid and pinning this to Trump.

To do that on an actual economy-wide scale would be really expensive and not worth it.
One interesting thing I remember is Italy having a law that was something like, if a workplace is closing down, they HAVE to give the employees an opportunity to come up with funds to buy it out themselves, which is pretty interesting. Corbyn also wants to introduce something similar to the UK, but in that case the government will assist with the purchase as well.

You give the news too much credit. The kind of morons who thought Trump has actually done anything notable in the "bring jobs to america" category will be chalking this up as "liberul lies n' propergander" anyway.
The whole concept of bringing jobs "back" to America is stupid anyway because they're ultimately mostly low-skill/shit manufacturing jobs that Americans wouldn't do anyway.

to clarify, ford's push towards electric vehicles was covered in an earlier thread and the part relevant to the story was from an analyst
regardless I found another news article that copy and pasted from the blog piece lol

The automotive industry has a quite complex tiered supply chain model.
If someone decided to buy a Ford plant (which I assume to be one that assembles the vehicle to its final form), they'd still need access to the lower tier-1 suppliers who bring in parts from engine blocks to side mirrors (these suppliers are very often separate companies). Also they'd need access to distribution channels too to eventually sell the cars.
Effectively the country would buy one larger cogwheel from a much larger machine.
Washington Post is your source? They have been caught for fake news numerous timea the past year. They are a joke.
Anyways, I've seen this talked over the past few days. He said Donald Trump didn't make him come to the conclusion but his policies headed him in that direction. They even play the video of him explaining this on my local news.
Of course it has little to do with Trump. It's Ford's business. They made the decision on upcoming policies. This title is just fueling the flames. I'm not on board with Trump but the media needs to be realigned and stop focusing on hate, fear mongering, and pointing fingers. Report the correct news and restore some dignity in journalism.
