Ecuador's foreign minister has arrived in Britain for talks with William Hague over the future of the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, who has been confined to the Ecuadorean embassy in London for almost a year. Ricardo Patino met Assange on Sunday and will meet Hague on Monday. On Wednesday it will be one year since the WikiLeaks founder walked into the embassy in Knightsbridge in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden to face sex assault and rape accusations, which he denies. In August last year, Ecuador granted him political asylum but the British authorities have made clear that he will be arrested if he leaves the building. Patino said Assange was in "good spirits" despite the "limitations of his accommodation". He added: "I was able to say face to face to him, for the first time, that the government of Ecuador remains firmly committed to protecting his human rights and that we continue to seek cast-iron assurances to avoid any onward extradition to a third state. "During the meeting we were able to speak about the increasing threats against the freedom of people to communicate and to know the truth, threats which come from certain states that have put all of humanity under suspicion." Since Assange entered the embassy, the Metropolitan police have maintained a round-the-clock guard, which cost £3.3m up to March.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/16/julian-assange-ecuador-foreign-minister
Damn. 3.3 million pounds to guard the building day in and day out to make sure he doesn't even get out. And that's only from three months ago.
didn't the accusers drop their rape charges?
Doesn't change the fact that the UK goverment wants to basically kidnap him.
The fact that Rafael Correa claims to be protecting free speech might be the funniest thing I've read all week. But on the issue at hand, I seriously hope thing has a resolution soon. A lot of money is being wasted on this guy for survaillence on the building he's in.
The whole thing goes like this: Sweden put out an arrest warrant with charges. Sweden withdrew arrest warrant with charges. Sweden re-instated arrest warrant no charges, just want to question Julian Assange. Julian Assange was arrested. Sweden applied for extradition. Julian Assange did everything he could to avoid being extradited because he has some leaks that say he will be on-extradited to the USA. Julian Assange extradition ruled lawful. Julian Assange broke bail conditions and hid in the embassy. Rumours constantly circle of the arrest warrant being withdrawn to try and get Julian Assange out of the embassy. Arrest warrant still in force, he has not been charged with anything. Julian is basically throwing a tantrum and the UK, US and Sweden are returning the favour with their own tantrum. (One won't let themselves be extradited on the miniscule chance he will be on-extradited, the others refuse to confirm he won't be on-extradited.
One won't let themselves be extradited on the miniscule chance he will be on-extradited
I dunno, it sounds like a reasonable assumption that he would be. I remember when I first heard that he was wanted to extradition to Sweden, my first reaction was to think that he would be passed on to the US, whether that's likely or not.
holy shit i couldn't imagine being cooped up in a single building for a year. i would have gone fucking nuts(more nuts than i already am).
didn't the accusers drop their rape charges?
Does that even matter? The governments of the West still going to have him hunted down. They'll probably drum up even more charges to legitimize their hunt and ruin his reputation. Ecuador is really setting itself up for some CIA regime change with it's policy towards Assange.

It is easier to extradite from the UK than Sweden.
I bet even a basement dweller can't match up to him
You know what would be funny? If Assange just went silent for awhile, then later claims to be in Ecuador already, and the Ecuadorian government claims it's true. Then when the UK Police eventually leave, he sneaks to Ecuador for real.
