Just 210,000 of the coins were minted to mark the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens, compared with 22.7m with the shield of the Royal Arms in 2008 and 7.5m of the Girlguiding 50p in 2010. Around one in every 300 people is likely to have a Kew Gardens 50p, but the Royal Mint said it was likely to disappear fast now that it had declared the coin as the rarest in general circulation. A spokesman said: "We're urging everyone to check their change to see whether they could have one of these exceptional coins in their pockets." The coin featuresthe Royal Botanic Gardens pagoda encircled by a vine, the dates 1759 and 2009, and the word Kew at the base of the pagoda. There are numerous bids for the coin on eBay, with Buy it Now dealers asking up to £23.95. The London Coin Company is asking £54.95 for an uncirculated example in its original sealed plastic case. Other Royal Mint commemoratives are unlikely to see such a hike in value, given the vast numbers of coins produced. A spokesman for the numismatic dealer Spink and Co said the 50p coin struck to commemorate the 2012 Olympics was still worth just 50p.
This is what you wanna look for
Damn
We have a £5 coin which to a collector is worth over £250, but its face value will always be £5. Welcome to currency.
you brits got lucky good thing i'm keeping few limited edition coins for a rainy day
The same thing happened with a bunch of 20ps a few years ago too, they were minted and were missing the date so they ended up announcing that shit to the general public and they ended up worth about 20 quid or some shit.
Damn
Hey, at least it hasn't lost value yet
That's the odd thing about coin collections, people pay money for money.
That's the odd thing about coin collections, people pay money for money.
It's the same with currency exchanges.
Heh, and I just got a job in the cash office at work as well, I handle several hundred pounds worth of fifty pence coins a day. Shame I'd get fired if I got caught swapping it for a normal one from my wallet.
Gone thru a few of these the last couple of years for fuck sake.
I don't have any unfortunately.
Fucking bollocks, I'm sure I've come across these a couple of times

Book keepers and cashiers used to "buy out" silver coins, red seal bills (worth more than a standard bill), and other such things from the tills all the time at my job.
I still have my commemorative coin for the anniversary of the Mini Cooper that one of you sent to me over here in the states. Is that worth anything?

I mean, I could probably get away with it, but it's not really worth the risk.
That's the odd thing about coin collections, people pay money for money.
I pay food for food at the grocery store
In Australia a penny from 1931 is worth a few hundred dollars. Check ebay.
Went and checked, got none of them from my latest trip there.
I have one??
Told my dad about this and he said "I think I had a few of those yesterday." "what did you do with them?" "put them in the parking meter." :suicide:

I spent one of these in a vending machine the other day. FUCK. I remember it because I thought it was an interesting design.
If I see one over here in America I will be sure to notify you all.
This may be funny but other country's currency often ends up in America. My mom works in the cash office at Walmart and has seen many a different kinds of currency from other countries. Perhaps I should tell her about this :v:
