NFC, dual- and quad-core support are all set, and Microsoft has shifted over to the NT kernel for Windows Phone 8 to make it even easier for developers to code for its mobile and desktop ecosystems. There's a new Wallet hub, deeper integration of Skype, and an updated Start Screen interface with support for small tiles. Despite the improvements and hardware support, Microsoft will not release this particular update to existing devices. Instead, the company plans to rollout a Windows Phone 7.8 update separately that will bring some of Windows Phone 8’s user interface changes to existing devices, but many of the other improvements will require new hardware. After shipping an initial Windows Phone 7 release in November 2010 and a major 7.5 "Mango" update less than a year ago, Microsoft’s mobile efforts excel in some areas but also lack the big name app support and feature sets of its rivals iOS and Android. While Microsoft isn't discussing all of its Windows Phone 8 features today, it's clear the fundamental platform change will help the company achieve feature parity in some areas, greater support for a wide range of hardware, and ultimately attract new users to Windows Phone. I'm gonna stick with my dumbphone after my contract ends in August until a good one of these pops up.
Oh god, that looks very busy, too busy nearly, works against the idea of WP7 :/
Man, this looks sexy.
I hope you mean the hardware, because the UI still looks like it caters to three year olds (big bright coloured boxes!!) and still manages to be a cluttered mess.
Oh god, that looks very busy, too busy nearly, works against the idea of WP7 :/
I think Windows 8 will look very similar with the live tile feature... And since this is the mobile version of Windows 8...
Oh god, that looks very busy, too busy nearly, works against the idea of WP7 :/
Yeah, the interface definitely looks like it's designed for larger displays.
I thought Windows 8 was going to be for PC's Tablets and phones, why are they making Windows Phone 8?
Microsoft will not release this particular update to existing devices. Instead, the company plans to rollout a Windows Phone 7.8 update separately
no, I got my Lumia 800 like 6 months ago give me Windows Phone 8 not some mid way bullshit.
please no, windows phone 7 was a disaster enough.
The UI looks cluttered, but that's only because whoever made it made it cluttered. The point is that it's more customizable.
No thanks, mega hipsters. I'll stick to my hyper-mainstream iPhone.
Why did they need to change it, the size of those live tiles are great in WP7.
I hope you mean the hardware, because the UI still looks like it caters to three year olds (big bright coloured boxes!!) and still manages to be a cluttered mess.
Sorry but I really like my WP7 UI, because it is uncluttered and to the point. I don't think that the fact it uses block colours makes it appeal to 3 year olds unless that's what you're looking for I guess! But this new UI looks dumb in comparison.
Those little tiles make it hard for me to look at for some reason. I will enjoy not having to scroll to see more tiles when it finally comes out though.
No thanks, mega hipsters. I'll stick to my hyper-mainstream iPhone.
Microsoft is hipster and Apple is mainstream. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
Those little tiles make it hard for me to look at for some reason. I don't understand why I'm not getting the Windows Phone 8 update either I got it like 6 months ago.
What! I just bought a Windows 7 Phone Mango. It's not even that useful then now there's this. Wow
Why did they need to change it, the size of those live tiles are great in WP7.
They're giving you the option to change it.
It doesn't have to look cluttered. You can make all of your tiles just as large as with Windows Phone 7. Some people wanted smaller tiles than on WP7. With this added customization, it caters to anyone.
What! I just bought a Windows 7 Phone Mango. It's not even that useful then now there's this. Wow
Technology changes fast. Get used to it. Almost everything is superseded quickly in the mobile market.
Technology changes fast. Get used to it. Almost everything is superseded quickly in the mobile market.
Dropping support with a single update 6-12 months after release is appalling.
They are trying way too hard to make the UI "different". It just looks like shit.
So it seems like all they did was make it so you can change between 3 tile sizes. That's really revolutionary. And it requires new hardware, but I would assume that has something to do with the switch to the NT code base. I really hope that means it's easier to make apps for, because they need more in order to compete.
Fucking really? I waited ALL THIS TIME for the WP8 and when I finally decided to get the Lumia 800, mind you my uncle has to buy it while visiting the States because the price for the phone here is OUTRAGEOUS, this gets announced and he's not even back! Aren't you a nut kicker, Microsoft, cheeky bastard. And this is going to be my first proper phone since 2005!
Technology changes fast. Get used to it. Almost everything is superseded quickly in the mobile market.
Goodness forbid companies stand behind their creations and for the consumer not to buy into everything they shovel out. Thinking Apple here
Well, about the clutter - I personally don't find it nice, but you can resize and remove tiles as you want. Basically making it look precisely like Mango. It's just to add customization, which isn't bad in itself.
No thank you Microsoft, I like everything neat & organized.
I hope you mean the hardware, because the UI still looks like it caters to three year olds (big bright coloured boxes!!) and still manages to be a cluttered mess.
Tell me you can change that, please... I look at it and... I don't know what to read or do first. Its so confusing.
I'm happy with my Droid 3 TYVM.
Good lord that's a mess, I think I'll stick with my lovely blank Android 4 desktop.
No thank you Microsoft, I like everything neat & organized.
The organize it. I'm not all-out on this update (I don't really know whether I'm going to update at all), but Microsoft is really just giving you more choice with this. Saying that you like everything cleaned and organized as a point of critique is somewhat ignorant, as you can change it to be exactly the way it was (well, without the list it seems). This is just giving the users wanting a bit more customization a way of doing it. And do you even own a WP7 device? You haven't posted in the WP7 at least.
