But those promises have come to naught after a non-start to its Kickstarter and numerous accusations regarding faked prototypes. Today the Chameleon suffers another blow as Coleco Holdings, the company with the rights to the Coleco name and properties, has terminated its association with RetroVGS and the Chameleon project.

The Retro VGS project fell far short of its nearly $2 million funding goal on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, but the console resurfaced in late 2015 with Coleco branding. What followed was a series of public and social media blunders that irrecoverably damaged the console’s reputation among classic gaming enthusiasts.

A supposed prototype of the Coleco Chameleon showcased at the New York Toy Fair in January was later revealed to be the innards of a Super Nintendo console crudely duct-taped to a hollow plastic shell. When pressed for clearer pictures of its prototype, the makers of the Coleco Chameleon produced an image that was quickly identified as a PC video capture card, rather than functional gaming hardware.

This isn't the only blow RetroVGS has suffered in the past week: On Saturday David Giltinan, the managing editor of RetroVGS's RETRO Magazine, announced his departure from the company. He cited the ongoing issues with the Chameleon as the impetus behind his leaving, saying "I have to separate myself from everything associated with it." Though he conceded poor messaging from RetroVGS, he also asserted that there was "no ill intent or maliciousness on the part of the team."
how do you even fuck up this much, i mean i can go buy a bunch of cheap retro consoles right now
From what I understand from the Beastcast (where one of the members went to talk to the spokesperson of this), the original purpose was to "reignite classic gaming consoles" that don't have silly things like "automatic updates, dlc, and all that crap." Can't help but think their mentality was screwed from the start. Of course, who cares what the original intention was when one of the heads of the company leaves right before the reveal. No matter what, it's an interesting story to have happened.
i always thought this thing was going to fail horribly, the only reason i had even considered getting one is because of my fascination with the atari jaguar shell.

Oh man I 've been following this train wreak since It was called the Retro VGS. I don't know how many people here listen to the CU Podcast but they tore this guy a new one.
hahaha what
hahaha what
I like how they took people's concerns after the snes part as "they want us to be more transparent? What's more transparent than an actually transparent case?" Which, of course, backfired. I'm still wondering how the forum sleuths were able to produce the exact capture card.
I am not surprised at all, this thing was sketchy from the start.
Coleco nowadays is just an empty shell of a name comparerd to what it used to be.
Coleco nowadays is just an empty shell of a name comparerd to what it used to be.
Apparently so is this console
This really does read like an Ed, Edd n Eddy episode.
