Madrid (CNN) -- If you doubt there's an unwritten code of honor among criminals -- governing certain behavior that's just not permitted -- consider this: Police say a burglar in southern Spain who stole an old Super 8 camera and tapes from a home discovered to his horror the graphic video content of a man sexually abusing boys. The burglar put three tapes in a brown envelope, hid them under a parked car, and then called police from a public phone, directing them to go find it. Inside the envelope, police found a note with the home address of the suspected pedophile and a message from the burglar: "I've had the misfortune that these tapes have fallen into my hands and I feel obligated to turn them in so that you can do your job and put that (expletive) in prison for life." And yes, they're still looking for the burglar, the one "with a conscience," said a police officer in Jaen.
The burglar put three tapes in a brown envelope, hid them under a parked car, and then called police from a public phone, directing them to go find it.
Man, before I die I want to find something so important I need to hide it in a paper envelope and hide it under somewhere and have to call someone to find it.
Most burglars often rob homes because out of sheer necessity to survive and get by the day, they are not all evil bastards. This was a case of morals in action, even though he risks a lot by revealing this to the police.
It reminds me of that one law & order: SVU episode.
I wonder where he found a public phone these days.
I wonder where he found a public phone these days.
People still use payphones outside of America. It's one of the many things we've given up on yet everyone else still has, like video arcades.

It's hard to ask a stranger if you can borrow their phone without sounding rape-y
Wow I know he helped the cops and all but I think calling them (expletive) was just uncalled for. Does anyone else hear an echo in here? [sp]Good for that guy, he did a good thing.[/sp]
Someone's phone decided to fuck up.
He should be given the kiddie porn dude's entire property as a reward because freedom and justice.
He should be given the kiddie porn dude's entire property as a reward because freedom and justice.
That would promote breaking and entering to find dirt on people
That would promote breaking and entering to find dirt on people
Sounds fun to me. It's like an antihero-hero thing.
People still use payphones outside of America. And the only arcade machines I know of are the ones at my local O'Leary's (that's a chain of pubs).
It was literally a tape. I was expecting it to be a CD or something but like how still to this day when a celebrity sex video is released, it's still referred to as a "sex tape".
It's kind of sad that we've given up on them. It's hard to ask a stranger if you can borrow their phone without sounding rape-y
I wouldn't give my phone to anyone, it's a great way to have your phone stolen
..since it was obtained illegally, isn't the evidence unsuitable to be used in court?
..since it was obtained illegally, isn't the evidence unsuitable to be used in court?
It is unusable. But the hope is that the police can have enough suspicion to get a warrant to search his house and possibly find more. Of course, this is coming from an american. I don't know how spanish police work.

Often they will say yes if your a customer (meaning you actually bought something), keep it short and local, because long distance fees. I let customers at my workplace do so. Though I rarely ever need to myself. Just when my battery runs flat.
..since it was obtained illegally, isn't the evidence unsuitable to be used in court?
Isn't that only if a cop obtains it illegally

Honor among criminals and degenerates had died.

Even some thieves have standards.
..since it was obtained illegally, isn't the evidence unsuitable to be used in court?
It's only unusable if it's illegally obtained during the investigation.
Honor among criminals and degenerates had died.
I am pretty sure that is only among bands of criminals. If this burglar had nothing to do with the child sex abuser then he has no reason not to rat him out.
Honor among criminals and degenerates had died.
Even among the most heinous of criminals, sexually abusing children is going too far.
