I've got a couple months before I go back to college and want to lose a bit of weight and get some muscle, I'd happily go to the gym but none of my friends/family are interested at all and I don't want to go by myself.
I've no idea on what I need to be doing though or what I need, the only thing I own at the minute is a manual 10 degree treadmill and that's it, I have no idea what regime to follow or anything so advice is definitely appreciated.
Stats; 6ft, 210lb.
I'm also doing this to mostly give myself a bit of self accomplishment, I've already had a month of waking up and playing video games/doing generally lazy things and feel as if I'm wasting these precious holidays, I have time to spare
is what I'm saying.
Thanks.
Forgot to mention food, I pretty much eat meat at every meal (except breakfast, usually a bran cereal), no set meal plan just when I'm hungry (three/four times a day usually), almost always drink flavored water I buy in bulk from a supermarket,
sometimes have some milk or fruit juice though.
cheal dumbbells from a garage sale, pull-up bar and proper nutrition. thats a start, oh and some discipline works wonders.
What you need? A gym membership, "I don't wanna go by myself" is nowhere near a valid excuse
if not then have fun spending 1000$+ buying a Barbell, a bench, squat rack/power cage and ~200lbs of weights.

won't get him far
I feel a bit awkward going to the gym by myself, I'd like to avoid it if possible, more of a last resort.
I don't want to go into bodybuilding territory or anything like that, I heard p90x gets some quick results?

Gym is still by far the best choice. Unless there's a limit on age, like there is here... 1 year left!
The cheapest gym here is £20 a month with a £25 joining fee and minimum £12-month contract, I just can't afford it either.
Isn't working out all about discipline anyways?
If you can't even stand up and go to the gym and work out by yourself then why do you even want to work out at all? you can't expect getting big by working out with shitty equipment at home, take the blows and workout by yourself it's not like people look at you and think: "what a loser"
I don't want to get big, nor do I have £150.
then why the fuck did you even make this thread?
This is a fitness forum, not bodybuilding and I specifically made the thread to avoid going to the gym because of various reasons.
1. get on the treadmill
2. eat below maintenance
3. look like those 'fit' tards that you see in commericals
I also want to gain some muscle while I'm at it though, I suppose some dumbbells and a chin-up bar would be a good start.

I'm not that interested in cardio apart from a bit of treadmill, but what core exercises should I be doing and should I follow a regime? If so, any tips?
Then stop being a socially awkward coward and go to the gym
push ups, sit ups, daily walks and propper diet.
I can't afford to go to the gym.
Are just doing push ups/sit ups enough though?
haha no push ups and sit ups are both endurance exercises
they will do nothing for your muscles
What about if I get some dumbbells and do stuff with them, curls maybe? No idea.
I'll be honest here;
When I see a person asking a question in the zones of "quick fix" "quick results" "few pounds off n somemuscle" I cringe.
People who want to be something, want to be just generally GOOD, don't give up on themselves and follow such measly goals. It reflects to every aspect of your life.
When I do something, I do the best I can. I play guitar, I don't stop playing. I think about it, I love it I just keep on reading. I don't feel a rush by just holding it, I need to progressively load the knowledge, the challenge itself, when I do stuff. Those people are winners.
You want to be a loser? go ahead. This is a shit thread. Waste of my goddamn time. I always tell my friends that want to workout it with me the same thing - "Before you join me, you better set some goals. I don't to workout with people who want to achieve nothing but a general shadow of what they think they want to be".
agree with everything Seith said
David, gym membership is going to be a lot cheaper than buying most of the shit you would need for a home gym.
Another big problem i see is that you said you "didn't want to get big" and then shortly after you say "I want to gain some mass" this is clearly very contradictory. I'm sorry everyone's kind of being a dick to you but we all get frustrated with these kinds of thread because people ask for advice and then don't like what they hear. There isn't a quick way to get fit (in any essence of that word, it's a broad term but regardless it is time consuming). If you don't have much money to spend on weights then i would suggest you look at the calisthenics thread but by going that route you aren't going to get much mass.
I hope this was helpful.
haha no push ups and sit ups are both endurance exercises they will do nothing for your muscles
Sit-ups are good for your abs and make them more visible. Push-ups tend to increase endurance but also size, not as good as bench-pressing. It takes time, but after 3 months you'll see some good progress. My friend does push-ups only, and he went from a chest with fat to a big muscular chest after 4-5 months. So they will do something for your muscles, just less than bench-pressing.
"I don't want to join a gym cause I don't want to be big. I just want to gain some muscle."
Shouldn't be a problem. Who told you to go to gym for several years.
and thus another failure of a thread
Needs more squats.
meh, i have to work out at home for the next 2 months, best you can do is get a pull-up bar, do sit-ups/crunches and some dumbbells you can work with
i started off with 20 lbs dumbbells now i have to do like 50 goddamn reps to failure, but its better than nothing
Honestly you would have been better off just making a thread called: How do I do fitness.
Don't bother working out at home, if you can't afford a gym with 100 times more equiptment than what ever you have, then you won't be able to afford the 1000 or more bucks on a home gym set.
Let me answer a few questions.
1. Q:Push ups and situps?
A: Go back to sleep.
2. Q:P90X
A: Don't bother.
3. Q:Should I buy dumbells and do curls?
A:Sure but goodluck mass anywhere else other than your biceps.
And if your to scared to go to the gym by yourself, then you have a looooong way to go before you achieve anything.
Sorry to be such a party pooper, but sitting in your room and doing 250,000 pushups isn't going to do shit.
"Push-ups are endurance only" Bah. Push-ups work seriously good for me.. Push-ups helps you, but at some point it will stop, and you'd need to bench. But for me, push-ups have worked alot.

if you've never picked up a weight in your life then yes they could work a week or 2
Well if you have a high BF% they can be super helpful
[editline]25th July 2011[/editline]
but in normal cases they become p worthless p fast.
if you've never picked up a weight in your life then yes they could work a week or 2
Neh, results just are less. But if you advance on the push-ups, results will be great.
