The iconic TI-84 calculator's stark grayscale is giving way to a color screen, at least in one new model. A forum member at Cemetech posted a shot of a "TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition," which includes a color screen similar to Texas Instruments' existing Nspire CX. According to the poster, it'll be coming out next spring, but his classroom received two dozen for testing. After seeing the post, Tech Powered Math reached out to an anonymous source, who confirmed that Texas Instruments was indeed developing the calculator; the company's site also references it as an upcoming device.
The TI-84 line has long resisted color, even as it was added to the Nspire CX — and according to Tech Powered Math's Lucas Allen, a color version would probably require other hardware upgrades. Allen also says math educators have shifted dramatically towards using the Nspire in recent years, and Texas Instruments would have two similar competing products. As anyone who spent math class surreptitiously gaming on a TI-83 or 84 can attest, a new screen could certainly open up some recreational options, but it's also easy to be nostalgic about the experience of playing Block Dude in black and white.
and relevant xkcd as always

Don't they already have the color TI-Nspires that are drastically superior to the 84 in terms of screen resolution and processing power?
Waiting for someone to port GameBoy color games to it.
Oh, and DOOM in full color ofcourse.
it took them this long?
Wow, it really is just like the future.
It'll probably cost as much as an unlocked iPhone V..

Well, I dont think the average consumer has much need to have a full color display. How often have you looked at a derivative and said "Gee, this sure would look better in Orange"?

Introduced almost a year and a half ago.
It took them this long? Casio had done this for sometime previously:
Why hasn't handheld computing devices (smartphones, tablets, etc), completely replaced calculators yet?
Because teachers would just think you're on Facebook.
When you're instead playing Pokémon Yellow on your calculator.
Why hasn't handheld computing devices (smartphones, tablets, etc), completely replaced calculators yet?
because calculators are superior at mathematics.
Why hasn't handheld computing devices (smartphones, tablets, etc), completely replaced calculators yet?
Because you can do other things on them besides calculate, and schools can't have that, no sir.
Why hasn't handheld computing devices (smartphones, tablets, etc), completely replaced calculators yet?
Because calculators are a lot cheaper than a smart device.
Why hasn't handheld computing devices (smartphones, tablets, etc), completely replaced calculators yet?
The simple matter is no reliable, standard calculator software for mobile platforms prevents them from being reliable. From a hardware standpoint, smartphones outclass calculators in every imaginable way.
because calculators are superior at mathematics.
Well TBH, my Android phone can emulate pretty much any calculator.
[SUP]Except the TI-84 for some damn reason.[/SUP]

Really?
Simple example:

Price wise, something like this (see retail price), is not that much more expensive than a graphing calculator.

There has to be a way to combine modern technology with education.
From a price and computing power point of view, graphing calculators are fairly outdated in contrast to the smartphone revolution we're in.

Well for starters, my phone can't function as a gas pressure sensor or EKG, but my calculator can.
I would kill to see some hot sexy action of Block Dude in color.

I use this a lot in classes on my Galaxy Nexus and my teachers know I'm not just sitting in class texting people, but on tests I can't use it for obvious reasons. Now I need to go out and buy a TI calculator to use on my upcoming tests and SATs, plus I'd rather conserve my phone battery even though I have a spare that I always keep with me.

You're a genius, the company that can connect typical sensory devices to mobile phones is going to go far.
Imagine connecting this to your phone.

Could probably get bluetooth sensors that can that.
Or usb devices + Android phone supporting OTG.

Also, I have a calculator from the early 90s that my physics teacher gave me; its more or less identical to one I bought last year :v:

I said nearly a decade ago that it was ridiculous that Nintendo didn't create a graphing calculator cartridge for the advance with some sort of button pad plugin gadget for it, and later that the DS was just begging for a calculator cartrige.
Slap a 30-50 dollar price tag on it (high on the advance because of the needed extra buttons), and that shit would sell like candy. Doubly so if they made the button layouts comprable to the TI calculators and supported roughly the same feature set as the 83s and 84s. Color screens, high(ish) resolution, and a decent chunk of processing power relative to the calculators.
Let's play some SNAKE!
