RENO, Nev. (AP) — Tesla Motors has chosen Nevada as the site for a massive, $5 billion factory that will pump out car batteries for a new generation of less-expensive electric vehicles, a person familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement was made, said work soon will resume at an industrial park outside Reno. Nevada still must approve a package of incentives Tesla negotiated.
Four other states — California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico — were vying for the project and the estimated 6,500 jobs it will bring.
Tesla needs what it calls the "gigafactory" to make cheaper batteries for its Model 3, a mass-market electric car the company hopes to sell by 2017 for around $35,000. Currently, Tesla offers only the Model S sedan, which starts at $70,000.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's office said only that he would make a "major economic development announcement" Thursday afternoon. A spokesman for Tesla, based in Palo Alto, California, said company representatives would be at the Capitol in Carson City for the announcement but offered no other details.
Well so much for that. With the work they've done already this isn't surprising a tiny bit. I'm glad it was finally decided.

They were waiting for California to cut them a sick deal. California couldn't do it, so they stuck with Nevada. Elon wanted to break ground on two sites at once and let the two states fight it out with deals but I don't know if that ever happened unless site 2 is super secret.

Yeah I was seriously hoping California would get it. It'd make more sense too because they're going to be making the cars right here in Fremont and that's quite a long way from where the battery factory is.
A shame he's decided to go with photovoltaic cells, especially given the recent success of the thermal solar plant.

Actually the batteries would only be 2 or less days away. That's a lot quicker than getting them across the country or the ocean.

Yes I would have liked to have the plant here in Fremont. Then we could have become a superpower and waved our cock in the rest of California's face
Every time I hear news about Tesla I get a big silly grin on my face. Tesla fucking rocks.
This is awesome. Tesla is possibly my favorite company when it comes to cars and pioneering. We need more people like musk. I have been waiting for this news for a very long time.
It's good that they're keeping production inside the USA anyway, wherever it is. Does it actually work out cheaper to outsource manufacturing of these cars to other countries where labour is cheaper?
All this news and yet still no plans of a charging station within 75+ miles of me... and I live in a fucking suburb of a large city
Imagine how much more they could have lowered the cost if they manufactured in China like every reasonable company.

That's kinda been the problem for quite some time now.
california already has so much anyways

harder to do thermal solar on a roof, but he could have done it for the farm

i think nevada is probably a better place anyways since there is a nearby lithium mine

yep they're revitalising a U.S. lithium mine because of this

13:31 if you want to hear Elon Musk talk. What a great guy.
Another milestone for the future reached by [del]Stark Industries[/del] Tesla Motors.

Actually it's not impossible to manufacture in the US, if you make use of robotics you can turn up a pretty good profit.
Also man, why the hell should one support the country they live in by providing jobs? Not like one have to live in the country they live in and have worker's taxpayers dollars go towards their roads and such.
Oh, and about the whole outsourcing everything to china. Guess where china is beginning to outsource manufacturing? Africa.

I was wondering when this will start to happen.

I think in this case people want tesla to make factories in China so that the car still be cheaper and that everyone converting to electric cars will be closer to the future due to that.
Imagine how much more they could have lowered the cost if they manufactured in China like every reasonable company.
Yeah, let's turn that country into even more of a giant factory
Was hoping for it to be in Arizoma, there goes my career move

Tesla is primarily driven by robotic manufacturing, it would be more expensive to constantly fly their specialists over to china than it would be to keep them in the country.
