The 56-year-old man must be assessed and treated under the sex offenders program and will be under judicial supervision in his country Victorian home. Victorian County Court Judge Elizabeth Gaynor said the man's low IQ and series of medical problems, including a kidney transplant and depression, meant a prison term was inappropriate. "My concern is that you are subjected to a sex offender treatment program, which I am not satisfied would occur in a prison environment," she said. "In my view, the community is best protected by you attending the sex offenders program." But Judge Gaynor warned the man to avoid children or he would be jailed. "You really need to keep away from children," she said. Judge Gaynor said she was not trivialising the serious nature of the man's crimes by placing him on the community corrections order. "The sexual abuse of children is an appalling crime no matter what the circumstances," she said.
My first reaction was disapproval, before I read the article. I think the judge may be on to something.

I think it might be beneficial to lock him up.
Rehabilitation instead of imprisonment. It's like people want to actually help people with their problems rather than hide them in a closet and pretend they don't exist.
I read Victorian as being from the 1800's and got really confused.
Rehabilitation instead of imprisonment.
"My concern is that you are subjected to a sex offender treatment program, which I am not satisfied would occur in a prison environment," she said.
This dude gets it. [editline]17th April 2013[/editline]
Or, you know, a mix of the two, rehabilitation but imprisonment until said rehabilitation is complete.
If you're rehabilitating somebody for something pretty serious it's a good idea to keep them away from people that they can harm, yeah. We need to treat people who would generally get tossed into a fucking cell like sick people, because I doubt a healthy person would straight up murder somebody for no reason.
This dude gets it.
Your quote even states the judge as a woman :v: Also very fine conviction, glad the judge knows her shit.
Oh god damn it, when I read the title, I thought it meant a victorian age child sex offender, like, some dude who caught a glimpse of a young girl's ankle or wrist or something. Oh well, I... Suppose it's nice that they're trying rehabilitation instead of hiding the problem away for three years, then acting like nothing happened? I mean, treatment is better than after-the-fact deterrence. Especially since it's not the guy's first time molesting kids.
I read Victorian as being from the 1800's and got really confused.
A time travelling Victorian pedophile.

Read and the tittle and got angry, especially because I live right near him. Afterwards though It's not what I thought. I reckon the judge made the right decision.
The world has become soft. I mean he only sexually assaulted a child. The logical thing is for him to attend nightly classes to learn that he shouldn't do that, because it was so unclear before. Bring back the gallows and hang this man! (is a joke. But people should be accountable for their actions.)
Well, he's been in prison once before for doing the same thing (To his own daughter, no less), and that clearly didn't straighten him up.
I don't understand. His stupidity does not earn my empathy. People should learn to better themselves, at least to the point of you know.. not sexually assaulting children. If this were anyone's kid/sibling here you would totally flip flop your point of view. Or we can all white knight for the pedophile. If you know you have a sick problem such as this your options are to: 1) act on it. 2) go turn yourself in before you act on it and receive help.

Also, at what cost? He only goes behind bars once he commits an act again. You are sick to even give this double offender any chance at redemption.
Read my post edit. Also, at what cost? He only goes behind bars once he commits an act again. He's done that 100% of times he's gotten out of prison for it. They're trying something different, something that might prevent him from molesting a third victim.

I guess we both have opposing views on this and nothing will change that. But, in my opinion, I would not lose any sleep if this man was never seen again.
If you know you have a sick problem such as this your options are to: 1) act on it. 2) go turn yourself in before you act on it and receive help.
Our society doesn't exactly give pedophiles supportive sanctuary, and I can understand all the abuse towards pedophiles, I really can. But you can't go on and on about how they're sick fucks and anybody that tries to defend them is a "White knight" and expect them to actively seek help, they'll either act on it (and hide it) or live with it their entire life, too afraid to seek help because they'll be ostracized from society.

I'd rather have a few people be mad at me then totally ruin a child's life over the situation I have been given.

Now, if we throw him in jail, he'll go out and diddle a third kid. If we throw him in rehab, he might not go out and diddle another kid. What seems the best option to you?

We NOW live in a world where people can no longer be locked up for life. I say bring that option back and in extreme crimes execute people. I am done debating this, I am not here to change your mind on the matter. I just hope that you never have to experience anything like this with your family members or anyone else close to you. But if you do, you will only then understand the pain the victims feel.

Admitting you are a pedo will essentially ruin your life. You'll lose friends, family etc.
I read Victorian as being from the 1800's and got really confused.
I know I was expecting it to be like one of those 200 year old murders they finally solved except with a kiddie fiddler This judge though, that guy had a whole list of problems so he's nice to do that I view pedophelia as a mental disease. Theres normal ranges of human sexuality but stuff like pedophelia and necrophelia are obviously not normal and should be treated. It's probably the same sort of fucked up brain wiring that links food and sex that causes people to get off on killing and eating people except with parental instincts, not food [editline]17th April 2013[/editline]
Our society doesn't exactly give pedophiles supportive sanctuary, and I can understand all the abuse towards pedophiles, I really can. Big difference from having a mental disorder and acting on it. It'd be pretty noble to ask for help.

Once they're released they don't commit another crime, so rehab is obviously MUCH better than imprisonment. Everyone gets a chance, even mass murderers, if they still look like they would threaten society, they get more years. It's a system that works very well. Everyone has this sick view of prison having to be this awful grimy place full of awful grimy people, it doesn't help then and they would still be awful grimy people when they get out, rehab takes awful grimy people and turns them into normal citizens.
