Mitt Romney strongly denounced an anti-Muslim film linked to riots against U.S. diplomatic compounds in the Mideast on Thursday, accusing its director of wrongly offending Islamic sensibilities. His comments appeared to move him in line with the White House’s own position.
Romney told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that while he had not seen the film himself, he knew enough to declare it a “very bad thing.”
“You know, I think it’s dispiriting sometimes to see some of the awful things people say,” Romney said. “And the idea of using something that some people consider sacred and then parading that out a negative way is simply inappropriate and wrong. And I wish people wouldn’t do it.”
Romney said that the film is clearly legal under the Constitution.
“Of course, we have a First Amendment, and under the First Amendment, people are allowed to do what they feel they want to do,” he said. “They have the right to do that, but it’s not right to do things that are of the nature of what was done by, apparently this film.”
The Republican nominee also condemned Florida pastor Terry Jones, whose burning of a Koran sparked deadly attacks abroad in 2011, for promoting the film.
“I think the whole film is a terrible idea,” he said. “I think him making it, promoting it showing it is disrespectful to people of other faiths. I don’t think that should happen. I think people should have the common courtesy and judgment —- the good judgment — not to be — not to offend other peoples’ faiths. It’s a very bad thing, I think, this guy’s doing.”
Romney’s comments denouncing the film while simultaneously standing up for freedom of speech were nearly identical to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s statements in the wake of the deadly attacks on Libya and Egypt (although it is not yet clear in Libya how much the film contributed towards the crisis).
Clinton called the film “disgusting and reprehensible” on Thursday, but also called on national and religious leaders around the world to denounce violence in response to it. She added that in America, “we do not stop individual citizens from expressing their views no matter how distasteful they may be.”
An earlier statement by the U.S. embassy in Cairo released hours before the attacks also condemned the film using similar language to Romney, though it did not contain an accompanying line strongly defending free speech. Despite the State Department’s disavowal of the embassy statement, Romney said on Tuesday that it showed the Obama administration’s “first response” to violence against diplomats was to “sympathize” with their attackers.
Here is the original Cairo embassy statement — issued before any attacks and since disavowed by the Obama administration — and Romney’s Thursday quotes, side by side:
U.S. Embassy in Egypt:
The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.
Becuase he may be a crackpot but he's not as openly insane as the other republican candidates.
One's got a goatee. We all know what must be done. Back to the proper timelines!

Since when did Romney ever give a shit about other faiths and mentalities? This shit was handed to him and he was told to say it or forget presidency. I mean. We're talking the guy who wants to restrict anything but missionary position and biblical science...

All the good Republicans did not like the odds so they are waiting until 2016.
What we got from 2012 is a collection of all the Republican rejects
I don't see why you guys are getting upset over his comments, he's not "accusing himself". I hate Mitt Romney and think he's an awful human being as much as the next guy but you guys are just getting bent out of shape through bias.
He's literally just saying that while the production of the film is totally legal, its not right to bash other people's views.

But, seriously, after this debacle I have no respect left for Mitt Romney. None whatsoever.
so, lemme get this straight: you guys are currently hating on Romney because he seems to have changed his mind on religious tolerance?

He's inconsistent, violent, hateful and rash. Everything that a president should absolutely avoid even before considering running. He's not fit for leading and serving a country of so much diversity, if he obviously only wants to help one group. Which is something his economic and ethics policies clearly show: A bias for rich white christians.

He's just an all around better candidate for this country, is all. Obama is a nice runner-up, but Romney just about supersedes him in every way. Though, I must wonder why Obama isn't manifesting some sort of plan to rip away votes better, but hey, that's another question for another day. For now, we all just hope that this savior will come into office and proceed to stamp out the super-reliance on and from other countries, with the exception of our neighbors up North and South. Those guys are pretty cool, you know.

Romney signed the massachusetts health care law that inspired obamacare. He's now campaigning on repealing obamacare.
Solid proof that Mitt is a flip-flopping jackass. Before he announced that he would be willing to go to war with Iran (which would stir up a flurry of hailstorms in the Middle-East altogether), but now he's denouncing a film which angered people and caused conflicts over there? Even worse, he now respects a belief that isn't his own? A stapler could do a better job than this guy, and they only have one job.

There was no novelty to begin with. Personally, I think Mitt is a pretty decent guy, just like Obama. He knows his shit, he can help, and people seem to just throw the idea of him under a bus because of a few blunders on his part. I realize Facepunch has this tendency to be leftist, but it just seems like everyone here hates him to hate him, to say they hate something, and then attribute it to whatever they can find in the news.
And how exactly does believing in him and what he says make anyone at all a bad person? Because every person, all of those thousands upon thousands, must be horrible people, right? They must like to beat up gays in the streets and run over dogs, I'm sure. Yes, I must be a bad person because Romney appeals to me more than Obama. Can't be any other way.
seriously, is anyone going to actually explain to me why Romney is apparently the devil?
