Verizon Disabled Paypal Fingerprint Payment Support on the Galaxy S5
After spending only a few minutes with the Verizon variant of the GS5, we have already discovered that Big Red has pulled Paypal payments authorized with your fingerprint, another of the major features promoted by Samsung for their 2014 flagship.
I noticed the missing feature, because in our video yesterday on how to setup the fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S5 on the AT&T model, Paypal is listed as one of the features that can be used.
On the Verizon model, that entire option is gone, along with any chance of getting it installed.
To get it up and running on the AT&T model, the phone requires that you download an app called NNL Fingerprint Passport, which is FIDO (Fast Identity Online Alliance) ready software that allows you to authorize your fingerprint for payments. Once that has been activated, you link the app to your Paypal account, so that you can then make payments with your finger. Again, this section of the Fingerprint settings menu is completely gone.
I may not be from the USA and don't have any of these issues in any similar fashion but i have to admit that the ISP/Carriers from the USA are just big scumbags. And till this day i'm still wondering why you guys aren't doing anything about it.

There's nothing we can do about it. They own enough of the government that meaningful legislation is impossible, and we can't boycott them because they are the only option for telecommunications.
The fingerprint payment system seems really gimmicky to me. Verizon is really scummy when it comes to controlling what software and features they let manufacturers put on their phones.
I'm sure there is some backdoor method to put it back in if you were determined to have that feature, but I guess it's shitty?
Idk, I don't think it's a huge loss
Just flash a custom ROM? Problem solved. :)
It's not in the overlords (banks, corporate elite's etc) interests to allow this. You guys must respect this and stop complaining, after all we are enslaved to the system we call "capitalism".

The invisible hand is just mad that it doesn't have fingerprints.
I'm not surprised. They constantly pushed against Google Wallet on their LTE Galaxy Nexus as well. Verizon has something against buying and paying for things with your phone.

I'm sure that'll help the 90+ percent of the Android user base that doesn't know how to do that sort of thing; nor would really care to do so. The Android users who seem to think the ROM flashing community is a huge majority need to get a reality check. Flash a custom ROM is not a valid answer; Verizon shouldn't be disabling features in the first place.
respecting the amputee market who want to buy this
If you don't want carrier-molested android, buy an unlocked phone from the google play store.
There are cheap options, you don't have to renew your contract with your carrier, and it's pure and clean android.
Verizon only gets away with this shit because people buy their phones.
stop buying their phones -> maybe they'll change.
My last two phones were purchased on google play because of this sort of thing. I enjoy free wireless tethering, no bullshit plan/price changes upon renewal, no carrier bloatware.
Buying a phone that is under contract is sometimes the only way people can afford it. The cheapest phone on the Play Store right now is $400. That's not much for a phone, sure, but when you're strapped for cash that's a lot of money to dump all at once.
Google should advertise it more then, since the majority of Americans are bombarded with TV commercials for Verizon, Virgin, etc. while Google phones are pretty much unknown. To be honest, I've never heard of these until now and have thought it was much simpler to just go to Verizon, will have to do more research the next time I'm due for a new phone.

Is there even any need for a Google Play edition because the MOTO G already runs (nearly) stock Android?

It's because they have a competing service.
Well isn't that a shame, I'd love to get that Moto G if I could buy it.

Definitely no disagreement there. People who really have a problem with what carriers do to their phones should do the research.
I know this article is about an American carrier but carriers outside the US are not fantastic either, so...
Yeah, I don't know much about outside the US, unfortunately. I'm not sure what options there are besides buying unlocked phones second hand or flashing a custom rom.
