The Verge- Rumor Has It Microsoft Is Testing Xbox Prototypes
Sources familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans have revealed to The Verge that the company has been testing a variety of prototype Xbox devices. Some of the prototypes have been tested with upgraded components you'd use to improve the performance of a PC gaming rig. It's not clear if and when Microsoft intends to launch an upgraded Xbox One, but Phil Spencer has already hinted the company will "come out with new hardware capability during a generation" that supports existing and future titles. A new wireless chip could be just a small part of the optional hardware upgrades to the Xbox One that Microsoft is planning.
Microsoft too?! This can't be a coincidence.

This was rumored as being a thing before the PS4K rumors started.
man, if the PS4 and xbox get upgraded versions soon it's not gonna bode well for the nintendo NX

It wasn't boding well anyway, even if the rumor was true that Nintendo is giving in and meeting all of EA's demands.
I just bought a PS4 this weekend.
It's only been three years, they better not pull a nintendo and release a whole brand new generation while leaving this current one without games.

They will not, Sony will likely do an upgrade as they did with previous generations.

And what rumor is that? First time I'm hearing this.
Oh jeez, can you imagine if this becomes the norm for consoles? Having a new version every 4 years? If that happens, there won't be any half-decent reason for not getting a PC at that point. Consoles were supposed to be the "Plug-and-Play" versions of PCs. That is, you put your disk in and bam! You're playing. Consoles never really had to deal with installation, memory, waiting for updates, or anything like that. If consoles go with "upgrade your hardware", that was the last good thing they had going over PC. Someone could buy a release console and play games for at least the next 5 years without every having to worry about hardware, barring manufacturer defects of course.
What are the chances of some type of "send in your old console and we'll give you a $250 rebate" or something like that? That could be an interesting choice for people that will undoubtedly get angry for "having to buy a whole new console", even though there's been plenty of coverage over the upcoming x.5 consoles, there will be people that have no idea.

Given what is rumored about the Neo, I don't think Nintendo has much to worry about- the improvements aren't as good as one would think, and really such incremental upgrades are more of a hassle than anything else. If the Neo and these prototypes are true and become a success, sure, Nintendo will probably join in on the "fun", but I think they'll at least be able to pick their stride back up if they've learned from the Wii U.

PC's will always dominate when it comes to performance and game verity.
Consoles have way to many limitations most of it is a result of lower end hardware and controllers/hardware.
Don't get me wrong, consoles are insanely popular and great for what they're designed for. But PC will always hold that edge.
Seems like the main thing that isn't bought up often in this sorta "oh this will ruin consoles" argument is that the iPhone has practically the same sales model, and that is a 800 dollar device on the high end. People are willing to shell out more for that in higher numbers than consoles move, and I think it has the extra benefit of keeping things in the headlines and keeping people interested in the product. App developers compile multiple versions of their apps that run on pretty much anything compatible with a given iOS version, and newer iPhone are thus capable of running more or less the same game code better/faster. Why is this a bad model for consoles compared to another disastrous 7 year cycle such as with gen7?
If something better is made available sooner, some will upgrade and some will wait longer. I do not think that this is inherently bad for maintaining any sort of "support" relative to PC gaming because it is still 2 or 3 device configurations at most to test/optimize against in a given product lifecycle as oppose to millions.
Imagine console fanboys being split in 5 different group:PS4, PS4K, PSVR, XBox One and Xbox One+, the comment sections would be worse than they are now.

As a long time Nintendo fan I'll be happy if they continue to support local multiplayer and all else kinda falls by the wayside, a normal default controller would be nice too. But then I love the WiiU so I'm probably not a traditional consumer.
I doubt MS is going to release more powerful xbox one soon. Phill Spencer clearly said that they have console upgrade feature in mind but this is not going to happen soon.
Remember when console fanboys would always say "at least we dont have to upgrade every year"
This is like the mother of all 'Expansion Pak Only' situations, geez. Barely feels like these consoles have been out long and already major upgrades planned, and asking developers to provide for both the original and new hardware is a bit silly. It just screams of a desperation to try and stay current with hardware changes in the PC world, perhaps to try and steal some of the PC userbase?
Either way, it doesn't seem right. Have to wait for more info.
I JUST BOUGHT AN XBOX ONE
FUCK ME
