• Android 3.0 Honeycomb to use NVIDIA Tegra 2 as reference platform
When it comes to the Nexus phones from Google, it’s clear that they quickly become the reference design for other smartphones using the same OS. The Nexus S, for example, is the first to do Android 2.3 Gingerbread. So, what’s going to happen with the next iteration? Up until now, Google hasn’t really said if one processor was particularly better suited for its mobile OS than another, but that could be changing with Android 3.0 Honeycomb. There’s word that Google is showing preference for NVIDIA Tegra 2, using it as the reference platform for Android 3.0 moving forward. This almost takes a page out of the Microsoft playbook, giving much more direction to hardware developers as to what hardware should be used. That’s what Redmond is doing with Windows Phone 7 (they all use Qualcomm chips) and that’s what Google reportedly wants to do with Honeycomb. Why now? Honeycomb is the first version of Android that is being optimized for tablets and Google is fully aware of the market domination that Apple’s iPad is currently enjoying in that niche. Conveniently enough, Samsung has already put in a massive order for the Tegra 2 SoC. If you’re expecting some Hummingbird or Snapdragon action on a Honeycomb tablet, you could be sorely disappointed. Oh Google, you always find a way to surprise. Can't wait to see what this does for Android. 2.2/3 runs amazingly as it is, but with a standardized hardware base?
I hope android knocks apple down enough to make a difference.
Sweet, hopefully I get a Droid phone by then /:
I hope android knocks apple down enough to make a difference.
I hope people stop hating on apple for... uh... no apparent reason.. I've always found Androids I've used are horribly slow with laggy response and poor touch response/ capability. My 1.5 year old iPhone still handles like it did on day 1 though.

That's why Apple makes their own hardware too, it might not be statistically as FAST or POWERFUL as some android devices (or some laptops, if you look at macbooks), but it still rinses them because everything is optimized perfectly for the hardware they chose to use.

This is fantastic news. Current Android tablets are pretty shitty in my opinion. I've tested a few out and they all have some bad response times. I think it's more the hardware than the software. By mandating the hardware, everything will be perfectly optimized. Fucking love Google.

It would be nice for some standardization, as Tegra looks like the most promising mobile chipset.

I dislike the majority of the userbase, the fact that it's overhyped, and a lot of people (that I know) assume smart phone means iphone? Okay. And don't get me wrong, I've used macs, and iphones. I don't like either one. Most of my family has an iphone, while a lot of the clubs at my school use macs. I wasn't bothered by the iphone at first, but when I got my captivate, the iphone is just pure shit compared to it. I can't stand using one anymore. While the macs are fine themselves, I just prefer not to use them. And apple as a company, I do not like in any way. I still applaud their marketing scheme of shoving everything down your throat, because it worked. But like morph said, competition is good. We'll get more out of it if apple does get knocked down. They'll make something new, and everyone benefits.
I love android, in fact I'm posting right now on the android.
Sounds cool. Kind of excited to see what progress they'll make. Ironically I'm posting this from my iPhone
I'm posting this from my fridge.
i just got the eclair upgrade on my Motorola Cliq and its pretty sweet
Milestone, oh yeah. I really should get around to putting 2.2 on it

My galaxy S outclasses the iPhone in every way except build quality. I owned an iPhone for 3 years by the way.
This is actually good news since Droid phones cant go under the Tegra 2 in terms of power. I'm expecting awesome things

My 3 month old Android phone is already missing out on updates. Edit: Android would have a much better ecosystem if Google enforced hardware requirements.
