An Austrian bus driver has been praised for his honesty, after handing in a bag he found on his bus containing 390,000 euros (£315,000; $506,000) in cash.
The sum represented the entire life savings of an elderly lady whom the police managed to track down.
The 77-year-old had withdrawn the funds from the bank earlier the same day before forgetting them on the bus.
The driver, named as Wolfgang R, said he initially thought the bag behind the driver's seat might contain medicines.
"I always do my rounds, and see if someone has forgotten something," he told a local newspaper of the incident, which happened in late November.
"I took the bag, looked into it and saw some of the money. There were many notes - something you never see."
Police were able to trace the owner through a passport and bank deposit slips which had also been left in the bag.
The man's employers, public transport authority Wiener-line, said they were very proud to have such an honest employee.
It is not known whether he was given a reward for returning the cash to its rightful owner.
Now that guy deserves a medal, holy fuck.
Wow, what a great guy.
Jesus Christ that's a lot of money.
Takes one heck of a man to not run off with half a million dollars
this story makes me want to cry
because there are such nice people out there
He deserves a reward, give him a thousand at least
Even though she got her money back I feel really bad for the woman.
I can't imagine it feels very good to have $500,000 just slip your mind like that.
Who here would've taken it, I wonder?
His name is Wolfgang, badass and honest. Does he have a massive white beard and is part of a bikey gang that donates to charity?
She's lucky he didn't use that on a vacation to the Great Barrier Reef, or the Outback, or any of the other places he could have gone out there.

I would be worried about why there is THAT much cash laying around. I think in all honestly i wouldn't even touch it. Something suspicious when there's just that much cash out in the open.

Austria, not Australia. did you even read the article? it says 'Vienna' right in the link.
I hope she gives him the 15k and keeps the 300 or something, that would be a nice reward for him.

Venice is in Italy.
[sp]Its in Vienna[/sp]
good spot friend
She must have dimentia or something, if I have 506K I won't just treat it like a $20
i'm not sure what i would've done to be perfectly honest, i'd want to give it back but the temptation would probably be enormous.
How can you even forget it that much money? You withdraw 300k and just leave it on a bus? I can barely walk 10 steps without checking my pockets for phones and wallets, and this person manages to forget a bag with that much money.

If I was carrying that much money I wouldn't take it on a bus that's for certain, I'd hire an armored truck to transport it wherever I needed it to go.

no doubt in my mind I would have kept it. just being honest
I know she's old but, how the fuck do you forget that much money on the bus? I can understand if you leave a few dollars but like, really?
Well that doesn't matter too much now that the really nice man returned the money. what a great guy
hes a better man than me

god damnit I always seem to get confused
If I was with friends we probably(maybe) would have split it, and paid the price later.
By myself I would have turned it in and fantasised about it the rest of my life.
Lotta bus drivers in the news lately.
