Google's Countdown Timer

Several minutes ago, I stumbled across something on Google by accident... this:

My initial reaction was, "OH, FUCK, WHAT HAVE I DONE?! Di-... did I break Google?" After the shock wore off I decided to question, "a countdown timer... a countdown timer to what?" The timer is counting down in seconds to something.

After a moment or so of thought, I typed something into google:

1384129 seconds = ? days (that was the time on the timer when I initially found it).

Google's answer was:

1 384 129 seconds = 16.0200116 days

At the point in time (when the timer read 1384129 seconds), in my timezone, it had just passed 11:30 PM.

Next I found out from Google that 0.200116 days is equal to roughly 29 minutes (so, at midnight tonight, the time in seconds on the timer should read 1382400).

[highlight]So it would seem that the countdown timer is counting down to something 16 days from midnight tonight... What's 16 days from midnight tonight?... Why, yew years day (on the dot, in fact), of course![/highlight]

... or perhaps this is a countdown to something more sinister. Perhaps Google is finally going to take over at the start of the new decade!

The OS source code was released but the finished OS will be released in about 11 months or so.
