• Cognitive Biases In Rock-Paper-Scissors, Study Shows
The study, led by three researchers at China’s Zhejiang University, recruited 360 undergraduate and graduate students to play a total of 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors while their actions were recorded. When a student won a round, the researchers found, they tended to stick with the same action (i.e. rock, paper or scissor) instead of switching to another. When a student lost a round, they most often switched to another action, rotating in a clockwise direction, from rock to paper to scissor.
http://canadajournal.net/science/cognitive-biases-in-rock-paper-scissors-study-shows-7326-2014/ I'm gonna try this out on my friends. It's really interesting to learn more about human psychology from such a simple game.
I thought this was well known?
I thought this was well known?
Just because it's well known doesn't mean we understand it. Research exists to make things understandable and explainable.
I thought this was well known?
Yea man! I win everytime since I know this! This has enlarged my penis by 59%!
I knew Rock Paper Shotgun was terrible.

Wouldn't be it counter-clockwise for them though, since in Chinese it's Gu(rock)-Choki(scissors)-Pa(paper)?
People usually go for scissors the first time.

Also, are you sure that's chinese you're thinking of? Maybe the mainland is really different but I've never heard of any of those words.

I always use rock. Even if the other person catches on and only uses paper, they eventually crumble from the anxiety of an impending scissor that they switch to something else instead.
If i win a round with something, i always tend to switch to something that beats the counter of that something.
RPS has more mind games and strategy involved than chess. Totally.
Good ol' 'rock'. Nuthin' beats that!
I thought this was well known?
Oh god these comments burn my eyes every time
I've heard that most people start rock because they subconsciously believe it's stronger than the other two options.
I hope one day I get drafted into a rock paper scissors study because I'll royally fuck up their stats. I've been throwing nothing but scissors for 2 years, I still win nearly half of the games I play (unless the person I'm playing has figured out my pattern) It's pretty funny.
I always throw completely randomly. I also almost always win, to the point where people have accused me of somehow being able to "cheat" .
I've heard that most people start rock because they subconsciously believe it's stronger than the other two options.
I choose rock because I don't want to change my hand.
I've been trying to train myself to watch and "read" their fists to see what they're about to throw (extremely tense fist = rock, extremely loose = paper, tight but loose on two fingers = scissors). I can't bring myself to do it

I did a small study and found that most males throw scissors first when randomly asked to play (as in randomly go up to a stranger and ask to play ONE game) Yeah I was a pretty bad college peer leader. But I did win 36 games in a row You can't give them time to think about it either, if they go "huh what?" you have to just say you're joking and leave. If you rush them and be like "ROCK PAPER SCISSORS GO" 90% of the time they will throw scissors doesn't work with females, no idea why.

Like reading books :P I wish when I studied Psychology we actually did something interesting. It was all just 'Read your textbook. We'll test you on what is written there next week. Repeat for several years.'
doesn't work with females, no idea why.
Girls just don't like to scissor. It's a shame, really.
