[release]Defying perception, Paramount and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger has now earned more overseas than in North America. To date, the superhero tentpole has grossed $178 million internationally, compared to $173.5 million at the domestic box office. The overseas tally includes a strong $5 million opening in China over the Sept. 9-11 weekend.
It’s hardly uncommon for a summer event pic -- and especially a 3D title -- to do bigger business internationally, but many assumed Captain America wouldn’t play as well among foreign audiences because of its title.
Captain America’s storyline itself is European centric, and follows Chris Evans’ character as he transforms from a scrawny kid from Brooklyn to super-soldier and joins forces with the allies to stop the Nazis.
“It’s done very well in the U.S., and fortunately it’s done very well, and even slightly better, at the international box office,” Paramount Pictures International president Andrew Cripps told THR, noting that Captain America has yet to open in Japan. Early on, there was a debate within Paramount and Marvel as to whether having Captain America in the title would be off-putting to international distributors, and so the studio offered an alternative title, The First Avenger.
Cripps turned out to be correct in his hunch that the Captain America character has such strong brand recognition -- the comic books have been published in at least 75 countries -- thatforeign distributors would happily choose Captain America: The First Avenger. Only three countries opted for The First Avenger -- Russia, Ukraine and South Korea. Everywhere else, it’s being released as Captain America: The First Avenger.[/release]

that's barely any more. Usually overseas revenue is close to double domestic.
Well I'm not surprised... It's one country vs. the world. Who would win?
I gave my breakdown of the true meaning of the Captain America movie in the film thread and I think it also explains why even non Americans like watching it.
In short, Captain America can't get any. No matter how big and powerful he gets, all the smaller and less powerful guys around him can get laid and he can't. So he vents his frustration by looking to shoot his wad in war. Captain America IS the United States. Think about it.
Damn, they made bank on that movie.
Still not interested in it.
The Avengers better be the best damn superhero movie since The Dark Knight or I'm going to shoot somebody.
It was a good movie. I really liked how they portrayed the definition of a true hero by showing his personality in it where he only cared about good and was completely selfless when it comes to others lives.
It's because overseas it was a comedy movie.
Well duh movies are gonna make more overseas. Americas population is something like 300 million, whereas the rest of the world's population combined is like 6.5 billion or something.

That was literally the perfect comparison.
So it's comparing 1 country to the rest of the world?
Uh how is this surprising?
It's kind of funny that Captain America was favored more by people under the protection of Captain Othercountries than Americans.
Foreigners like explosions.

Texas has a bigger population than Australia :tinfoil:
It's because all those other commies just want a taste of what freedom and a real American hero is.
I went to see this because The Inbetweeners movie was sold out.
It was utterly, utterly terrible.

who the fuck watches the inbetweeners
It wasn't terrible, but anything superhero post-TDK just isn't as good for me anymore.
Is that mother fucker on the right wearing a bowler hat? What a baller.
It's because it had Nazis in it. Everyone hates Nazi's.

They're not Nazis, they're Hydras. I think that's what they called.
movie would have been better if the antagonist was actually a threat and not some incompetent "nyah hah hah" sinister villain whose plans never work with a billion throwaway useless soldiers that can't aim for shit under his employ
there was a scene where a HYDRA soldier took like 3 seconds aiming a big fuckin laser cannon RIGHT AT CAPTAIN AMERICA and then opts out to run up and try and punch him in the face
are you fucking retarded

I realize they were aiming for a film that felt like it was made during the 40's but it was still a really shitty decision
They're not Nazis, they're Hydras. I think that's what they called.
Exactly. They were too evil, even for the Nazi's. Now that's an achievement.
Saw it on release day in Canada, was tottaly worth it.
this movie rocked. like, it was the perfect superhero movie. It followed the comic's lore excellently.
It's not really a news story about how the movie did better overseas than the US; most movies do.
Captain America wasn't expected to gross that much due to the obvious name and themes, that's why it was surprising.
Captain america is p. shit, I see enough usa glossing in other movies anyways.
Captain America was the best marvel superhero movie since Spider-Man 2. I especially enjoyed how they didn't shake the fucking camera when there was an action scene. It was silky smooth, and stylish.

He almost got some of dat British girl. Too bad he had to SAVE THE DAMN WORLD.
I reckon it's one of the better superhero movies to come out.
Saw it night of release, for free too, god i love working at a cinema.

Yeah but here's a guy who saved the world, thought he died, then wakes up so he's essentially come back from the dead, and he is told he's in the future, a totally mindblowing future world he sees with his own eyes, AND what's all he can think about? I had a date! IE he was going to get laid finally, none of the rest of it(saving the world, kicking ass in war) meant anything to him compared to that.
I believe that's what humanizes this otherwise superpowered freak, when you get right down to it he just wants what every guy wants. He's not on some moral high ground looking down on everyone, he's one of the guys. And it in that way it represents the United States in a similar light, people in other countries can watch this and not feel like it's all propaganda about how the US is superior.
I thought it was obvious that in many foreign markets they enjoy American movies because they're well produced and have nice effects. Entertainment is entertainment, and most other countries don't throw their money into funding movies like we do

The point of that line was that Captain America is such an honest, good man, that the idea of missing a date with the woman he loves is absolutely crushing.
