(TheStreet) -- Cisco's much-hyped plans to revolutionize the Internet have finally been unveiled with the networking giant announcing its latest router technology. In a webcast on Tuesday, Cisco launched its new CRS-3 router, which the company claims will pave the way to much faster Internet speeds. In separate announcement, AT&T said that it has already used the CRS-3 in a 100-Gigabit trial. "It's all about the next generation of productivity," said Cisco CEO John Chambers, adding that the CRS-3 offers more than 12 times the capacity of its competitors. "It's the foundation for the next generation Internet." Another Cisco executive explained that the CRS-3 can handle data at 322 terabits a second, compared to 92 terabits a second on the first version of the CRS. "It can deliver all the movies ever made in just four minutes," he said. "The power is absolutely tremendous." Chambers explained that the CRS-3 can handle 1 billion videos at any one time and used the webcast to reiterate his company's video mantra. "Video is the killer app," he said. "Video brings the Internet to life and lets us all participate in a very constructive way." Cisco's shares gained 5 cents, or 0.19%, to $26.18 on Tuesday, mirroring the broader advance in tech stocks that saw the Nasdaq rise 0.33%.
322 Tb/s That's 40.25 Terabytes. EVERY SECOND. Holy shit!
Not only did my jaw just drop, but I'm pretty sure my balls just did too.
It can handle 322 Tb/s, we are nothing near the technology to make shit go that fast.
i still get 50 kb/s lol
Still not enough for the average FP'ers porn downloads.
The real problem is implementing this framework over a whole country.
Too bad it's gonna take ages until we get a 1gb network anyway. This is like, in 200 years before it actually gets put to use.
That's almost as fast as me in bed :smug: [editline]03:34PM[/editline] wait shit
And ... gets bottlenecked by 30/2 internet speeds.
And I'm still stuck with a 15/2,5 Mbit connection. Somethings very wrong here.
and I thought google's gb/s internet was revolutionary, holy balls
Yeah and when will we get it? In 100 years?
I'd be happy if they just introduced affordable 100mb/s internet already instead of dawdling about 40 terabyte connections that won't matter to any consumer for another few decades
Too bad we won't be able to use it. We're just now getting gigabit connections, so it'll take at least 100 years to even think about implementing speeds this fast. Getting the framework for it set up will take a long time.
MSRP starts at $90,000 :v: Also, I love how they measure throughput as 'Seconds per Libraries of congress' now... Give it another 10 years and we'll be there or way past it.
Too bad it's gonna take ages until we get a 1gb network anyway. This is like, in 200 years before it actually gets put to use.
Wasn't it 10 years ago we thought 256mb of hard disc space was impossible?
Wasn't it 10 years ago we thought 256mb of hard disc space was impossible?
20 years
It can handle 322 Tb/s, we are nothing near the technology to make shit go that fast.
What the hell are you talking about? This is meant for data centers and network hubs, not a home or even business use. This thing is a ISP level router meant to be used in key locations.
And I'm still stuck with a 15/2,5 Mbit connection. Somethings very wrong here.
10/0.5 here. Feels bad man.
MSRP starts at $90,000 :v:
Fret not! For if Cisco is making it for $90,000, a competitor will have one 2/3rds as useful for $45,000 within the month.
You guys are getting it wrong. The 322 terabits per second is total amount of data the router is able to transfer, not the amount coming in or getting out though single interface.
Gonna download the human genome, make an army of mutants.
Fret not! For if Cisco is making it for $90,000, a competitor will have one 2/3rds as useful for $45,000 within the month.
If someone needs a 322Tb/s router he is going to need the 1/3rd too.
hmm every movie ever made in under 4 minutes? I need faster, i am a torrent whore

[editline]02:54PM[/editline]
Gonna download the human genome, make an army of mutants.
I'm downloading the entire Library of Congress, then I'm going to delete it. Then I'm gonna download it again, and delete it again, over and over. :v:

theres a Cisco class at my High School. is this a class worth taking? i need a computer credit anyways
theres a Cisco class at my High School. is this a class worth taking? i need a computer credit anyways
I've taken basic cisco at my school's lab, and it was basic network setup, nothing special. I'd say take it for the fun of it, and that afterwards you can use it as a great argument that you know more.
