I'm surprised he managed to get both arms before collapsing.

I'm sorry, you can hardly call this a suicide attempt. A psychotic break or weird as hell call for help, but his chances of survival were high from the start.

It was a suicide protest. He was being evicted from his home, I believe, so he killed himself in such a gruesome way no-one would want to live in the appartment. He succeeded.

This story reminds me about a condition that some people have where they have limbs that they hate so much that they would just want to get them removed.
