How did they taste? BioWare wouldn't know, because the company donated each and every one to a local youth shelter. Chris Priestly, BioWare’s Community Coordinator, issued the following statement on their community forums: The gesture certainly gained our attention both with its creativity and deliciousness. However, while we do appreciate that fans were creative in how they expressed their views, after a lot of discussion, we decided ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team. This is a subtle, but important aspect in determining how to pass the feedback to the team. BioWare regularly works with many deserving charities, as such it was decided that rather than passing out the cupcakes to staff or wasting good food, to donate them on behalf of our fans to a local Edmonton youth shelter. We know that for the kids that have to use this facility, something as simple as a cupcake is a rare treat and would definitely brighten up their day. Thank you to the fine folks at the local youth shelter for accepting the donation and to the fans who donated the cupcakes. Reaction to the act of charity among BioWare's community, primarily those who donated $1,005 dollars to raise the funds necessary to order the cupcakes in the first place, is mixed. While some applaud the move, most are not impressed. More than a few have called it an example of "PR shenanigans" and others believe that it's just another sign of how dismissive BioWare is of its user base. The following sentiment, stated by BioWare forum member "Sp3c7eR," is typical of responses posted thus far: ROFL, you kidding me? These cupcakes were for you guys. Way to mock the fans' creative & good natured attempt at providing feedback for YOU. You just lost a lot of respect in my eyes. You "acknowledge" the feedback you're receiving by getting rid of something meant specifically for you. That's like running off stage if you're getting stuff thrown at you. Where's your dignity? A simple thank you would've sufficed. BioWare’s supposed mishandling of feedback is still a hot topic, many days later, though the conversation now includes a brand new sentiment -- that their charitable act is “hypocritical” given the shut down of the Child’s Play auction from the week prior. The previous reported donation drive was shut down by Child’s Play themselves, not BioWare. I would have no idea what else to do with them, unless I bought a new fridge.
nice PR stunt.
after a lot of discussion, we decided ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team.
I loled
That was nice of them, but they are turning into a shitty company now like EA.
Interesting move. Yes, giving them to charity is a very good thing, but it also means they can dismiss their fans reaction, and you aren't allowed to criticize them because of the above. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.
Snip
In the same thread, one guy pulled off a massive zinger:
Hey Bioware, you know what I find funny? You're being offered three colours to choose from, and using your own critical thinking you've made your own decision and said "We choose option #4". Giving Shepard that same choice would go a long way to showing you understand where this went wrong.
Burn.
Trying to take the high ground I see.
I call PR shenanigans!
I would have no idea what else to do with them, unless I bought a new fridge.
You don't have to fridge rate cupcakes.
What a fucking copout, They only donated them so they could dismiss the fan reaction to the ending.
It's nice what they did but it does seem to have a dismissive undertone too it.
RAGE, Perfect Dark, Shenmue 2 all had bad endings Are you complaining about those? 'BUT ITS EA SO IT'S DIFFERENT'
Where's your dignity?
You're the guys throwing a fit over them donating the cupcakes to something charitable and Bioware are the ones without dignity? Hell, they're already working on a new ending. So far, you got your point across, you win. Now they're just cupcakes. They give them to a good cause and your first response is 'NOOO BIOWARE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT US'? Grow up.
RAGE, Perfect Dark, Shenmue 2 all had bad endings Are you complaining about those? 'BUT ITS EA SO IT'S DIFFERENT'
You still don't get it do you? This is a series where you make choices you want but in the end of the trilogy all your choices were useless and you just get big "fuck you!" bad ending.
In the same thread, one guy pulled off a massive zinger:
Quote
Burn.
And here the "damage control PR team" though they could take a day off. Guess they'd have to reschedule yet again.
RAGE, Perfect Dark, Shenmue 2 all had bad endings Are you complaining about those? 'BUT ITS EA SO IT'S DIFFERENT'
But Mass Effect is a story driven game, which changes everything. I couldn't really care if the story in a game like LoL, Half Life or any other gameplay driven game was bad.
RAGE, Perfect Dark, Shenmue 2 all had bad endings Are you complaining about those? 'BUT ITS EA SO IT'S DIFFERENT'
People did complain about those, where the fuck were you? Anyway, the reason people are mad about this is, over the course of 3 games, we were told all our choices, all the things we did would matter... and they didn't. They did a cop out 3 way ending that doesn't make a difference at all.
You're the guys throwing a fit over them donating the cupcakes to something charitable and Bioware are the ones without dignity? Grow up.
Doesn't count if they charge money for the ending, and they've been really dismissive in the way they handle this. They refuse to acknowledge they fucked the ending up. At least the kids who have to choose between A, B, or C are going to like their sweet, sweet ending though.
In the same thread, one guy pulled off a massive zinger: Burn.
lol oh man... that was a beautiful post. Well played, Bioware walked into that one.
And to think that this started with an ending that had 3 different colors...
What a dick move, Bioware.
The rumored new ending Bioware is working on: "Donate Reapers to charity".
Who the fuck cares? They're just cakes.
"FUCK YOU FOR GIVING THOSE CUPCAKES TO KIDS! RAAAAAAAAAAGH"
It's not that they gave the cupcakes to kids, it's that they basically said "fuck you too" and gave them all away,
Make a videogame with a bad ending. Hated for life. Also their donations means something to the needy
Not sure what to think. Instead of just having thanked the fans for that creative reaction to criticise the ending they threw that "was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team" in there. I don't really mind them messing up Mass Effect 3 since they now work on a new/edited ending but their PR reaction is just snobbish and two-faced so far. But the young people are probably happy.
Make a videogame with a bad ending. Hated for life. Also their donations means something to the needy
quick let's misinterpret what people are complaining about!!11
quick let's misinterpret what people are complaining about!!11
You'd swear it was like "Occupy Mass Effect" or something
You'd swear it was like "Occupy Mass Effect" or something
Don't give them ideas.
