BEIJING (AP) — President Donald Trump reaffirmed Washington's long-standing "one China" policy in a call with Beijing's leader, a move that could ease anger in China over his earlier suggestions that he might use Taiwan as leverage in negotiations over trade, security and other sensitive issues. More than two months after deviating from decades of American diplomacy regarding Taiwan by accepting a phone call from the self-governing island's president, Trump appeared to be trying to reassure Beijing he would not seek to upend relations between the world's two largest economies. "This is an important step," said Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser on Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. "This will now pave the way for the engagement of the U.S. and Chinese governments on a wide range of issues."
source: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/515798dbf6c545beb7f19711e092c1e0/trump-reaffirms-one-china-policy-call-chinas-xi
Sounds like someone knocked some sense into him. Though it's kinda funny reading
Trump appeared to be trying to reassure Beijing he would not seek to upend relations between the world's two largest economies.
After months of
'We can't continue to allow China to rape our country'
I bet that he just now learned about both how China is one of America's most important trading partners and also that they have nukes Most of his rhetoric before was him being upset that they have a thriving economy and I don't think he realized that American consumers are largely responsible for this
spits flaming rhetoric at china for months, then immediately sides with them seems good
This also means Bannon has been restrained, and may have lost a considerable amount of power.

wtf i love china now
I don't think Taiwan is going to be happy about this.
I don't think Taiwan is going to be happy about this.
There's a certain Taiwanese dude here on FP I know. He is going to be pissed
As much as I would like to see Taiwan become fully recognized and see the One China policy get eliminated, Trump went around it in the absolute wrong way by antagonizing China. I'd much rather have the awkward pseudo-recognition and stability of the current situation than have the economic fury of China get dropped on the US for making what essentially amounts to a symbolic gesture to a much smaller and less critical country.
We were always friends with china.
Well the whole world was kinda a dick when they pulled Taiwan out and give it to China in UN.
Just proving to the world that he speaks before he thinks. At least he fixed his mistake.
one china policy is some tyrannical russian-type style bs but I'm glad trump changed his mind on starting ww3
Leaving Taiwan hanging again isn't "sense". China weren't going to do anything over Taiwan.
Risking serious damage to the relationship of our largest trading partner and inanely considering using Taiwan's independence as some kind of bargaining chip isn't "sense" either. Right now there's little the US can do about Taiwan unless we want to completely restructure our society to be free of Chinese reliance.
