So my friend had gotten one of these types for his pc and he sounds clear an all that. But I'm wondering if anyone here uses any of this type of stuff. Microphone: http://www.amazon.com/Technica-AT2020-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0006H92QK/ etc : http://www.amazon.com/Nady-MPF-6-6-Inch-Microphone-Filter/dp/B0002CZW0Y/ etc : http://www.amazon.com/Broadcast-Studio-Microphone-Suspension-Scissor/dp/B00AK7SKL4/ etc : http://www.amazon.com/Nady-SMPS-1X-1-Channel-Phantom-Microphones/dp/B000XUUXB8/ etc : http://www.amazon.com/Your-Cable-Store-Microphone-feet/dp/B001JI2KHS/ etc : http://www.amazon.com/GLS-Audio-6-Feet-8-Inch-Stereo/dp/B006LQH2B2/ I see a few people use this set up for like let's play or just chatting or whatever. (Sorry If this is in the wrong sub forum and all)
I have these microphones http://www.amazon.com/MXL-990-991-Recording-Microphone/dp/B0002GJI3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1367094835&sr=1-1&keywords=MXL Though it is in mono so I have to use a mono to stereo adapter. But honestly if he's just using that microphone for Let's Play's and chatting then he is just silly. Have you asked him if he was going to do voice over work? I do know that the Rooster Teeth guys use the MXL I have above. I also have that pencil mic for when I do anything with drums or guitar. I can't vouch for the Technica but I've been using MXL products for awhile now and I love them for starting microphones. That phantom power supply you have is enough to power the thing, but you'd might want to look into something like: http://www.amazon.com/Avid-Technology-Recording-Studio/dp/B0041OSWUG/ref=sr_1_3?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1367094996&sr=1-3&keywords=mbox The M-Audio is made by Avid, which is one of the top audio software manufacturers. Plus, it has a mic gain control which the supply your friend has does not, unless the picture plays mind games. The stand is a way too much if you're simply getting all this for Let's Play's and chats. Lastly, stay away from Behringer. That is a recommendation from Mike Morasky's (Valve) lead sound engineer. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] P. S mono doesn't affect chat, only when you're recording
Ah, I've used audio technica an they seem to be fine. Im using a headset by them right now. Is there anything cheaper for the recording studio? The stand is pretty much just for hooking it to my desk, didn't think the microphone came with like a mount or something.
I have used at2020s, and they sound pretty great. If you are planning to just plug it into your computer, I would suggest getting the usb version. The XLR version will most likely be quiet and not sound great without a preamp. You could get one for decently cheap though. My buddy just sent me this the other day. http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-502-XENYX502-5-Channel-Mixer/dp/B000J5UEGQ/ Said its good, he uses that right there himself. I used to use a AT 2020 to Mackie 402 VLZ3 into my computer. Served me well for awhile until I got an upgrade. Now I use a SM7B and a RME Babyface, wouldn't go back.

Behringer is indeed shit.
I've had good luck with behringer. I have a Tube Preamp from them for my shotgun mic for my video gear, and their 802 Mixer which works well as a preamp and does 48v phantom. Depends on your budget though. I happen to use the USB AT2020 which is a really great starter mic. I've had mine for a few years and use it for hours every day. If you're looking for more control, then go ahead and go for XLR/Manual type stuff. I'm planning to move into that kind of thing soon.

Yes, you'll have to put a bit more money up front, but it's gonna be worth it down the road. Just a different angle on this.

USB has limitations but simplifies things for people who don't need the control.
I'll probably wait for the mixer but I just ordered the other parts and that. Should be here tommarrow. Im ecstatic for it.
I'll probably wait for the mixer but I just ordered the other parts and that. Should be here tommarrow. Im ecstatic for it.
Why are you buying a mixer exactly? Not saying it's neccessarily a bad idea, but what are you going to use it for?
Most mixers have 48V phantom power. I hope you didn't order that and a mixer.
Not the mixer. But now im trying to set this shit up. Its so fucking confusing doing the arm and that. Im stuck trying to attach the pop filter to the arm and Its so fucking odd because the filter hook is just so weird. It curves and has a really long screw to hook but ya know. I dont know where and how.

But thank you so much. for helping - everyone.~

Really, if you're getting a microphone because you want better quality, make sure you've got a preamp in the same league.
I don't have a gain knob. I have my microphone max on my computer setting.
Wait, so what did you buy? Just the phantom power?
Wait, so what did you buy? Just the phantom power?
You only need phantom power for condensor mics afaik. But OP, please post what you actually have right now. No one knows, and we can't help you without info.

He'll likely need a dedicated preamp for it or something better than his onboard.

Microphone - Cord for power - Cord for microphone out - microphone arm - phantom power supply - pop filter. Is what I have.
Shure sm58, the legendary mic, everybody from metallica to your tv presentor used at least once in his life.

I use it to drive a AT897 shotgun mic at about 300ohms. But a mixer will likely have the phantom power and good enough amperage in it as well, which is why we recommended going with a mixer and not buying just a phantom power supply. I also have a Behringer 802 which has a decent preamp in it with 48v phantom power. They are about 50-60 bucks. But you can go with a 502 just fine with one input, and then you easily route it into your Line-IN jack on your system and control all volume and EQ on the mixer live.
