Unfortunately for those of us with crappy internet, digital downloads of PS4 games will clock in at around 50 gigabytes.
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has been debunking rumours left and right in the wake of Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal event, and this time he has told The Guardian that all PS4 games will be available as digital downloads. He said that users downloading PS4 games might want to take advantage of the PS4's ability to download games and updates in standby mode, as they will clock in at a massive 50 gigabytes. For contrast, new release PC games downloaded via Steam average anywhere from 5-15 gigabytes. Those of you who still prefer to buy physical, worry not, for the PS4 will still focus on discs for the next few years.
Good.
People should stop making CDs, they are a waste of space and are not essential anymore.
500+GB built-in HDD confirmed.

I feel safer normally having a hard opy of the game compared to only just owning it as a softcopy.

That's true except for two things.
1. Collecting/Nostalgia
2. People with bandwidth limits
50 Gb's is a big deal on the second one.
Good to see that disks will still be there or this might have been a deal breaker for me. I get about 1mb/s max shared throughout the entire house. 50gb would feasibly take me a week to download.
Still, nice to see the option is there. It's not always practical (or cheap) to buy games on disk where I live so who knows.
The only issue is: How big is the PS4 HDD going to need to be? 500gb for a base model would seem pretty much like a minimum for something that's meant to be so 'multimedia'.

I work at Sony where every PS3 game/Bluray is made in the USA, that put a lot of people out of work.

When everyone has access to adequate broadband speeds and high data allowances, then you can say that. So far, especially in the rural US, semi-decent broadband period is extremely expensive to attain. By extremely expensive, I mean you need to pay your ISP to lay the lines underground to your house. And satellite is not really a good solution due to latency.
Huh, and this made me ask, will there be an option to save the games from the disk itself?

360 had it so I don't see why not. I would imagine it would still require a "proof-of purchase" system so you still need to insert the disc.
Well obviously for downloading Playstation titles to work yeah it will have a big hard drive. But I do wonder if Sony will explore hybrid SSD/HDD drives like in some of the latest Mac computers.
Didn't they say that you don't have to download the entire game to play the first part of it?
As long as they offer both physical and DL copies I don't see anything bad about this. This should have been done with the PS3/360

We're soon reaching a point where SSD's that are both fast and isn't itty bitty when it comes to capacity are cheap enough.
The PS3 couldn't take advantage of a SSD, due to it only sporting a s-ata 150 interface (AFAIK)

Have mercy on my 100kb/s connection
I think I'm going to get a PS4 instead of an Xbox 720
I only worry about this because of the current prices of PS3 games on PSN. £59.99 for crysis 3 from PSN? No thanks.

the '720' hasn't even been revealed

You should get an mp3 player and a cassette adapter
You should get an mp3 player and a cassette adapter
His car may not be old enough to have a cassette deck, but too old to have a AUX port. And not all cars have both.
Of course, the solution there is buy a new headunit. Or if you feel cheap get a FM transmitter.

Then what happens when the downloads are no longer available and you don't have any CD cases to dust off and play years later?
You should get an mp3 player and a cassette adapter
A good chunk of the car radios these days have a direct line in too. Even the family pickup truck from the 90s has that. (It also has an actual remote for the radio...don't ask me why, I wondered the same thing)

Our car has a usb connection.
It's good that everything will be offered online and on disc, people like choice.

I'll stay with the discs.

I can vouch for this. I know the vast majority of people have broadband or faster internet, but then you still have the people who don't have access to those services. That being said, I live in a rural part of the U.S., and satellite is still the best option I have next to lying cable ~10 miles to the nearest town.
I will say that once fast internet is extremely cheap or at least more accessible for more people, then we might see digital download-only games, but I seriously doubt most people now want to spend a week downloading a game when they could go to the nearest store and buy it and play it all within 30 minutes.
Seriously, if you're expecting the gaming industry to just up and go completely digital, you're head is a little far into the future, especially considering that these games are increasing exponentially in size from each generation to the next. Once the PS4 is aged a little bit, 50GBs may not be a big deal anymore but then the next generation will be announced and games will be even larger, I honestly couldn't see an all-digital console system working for at least another ten years.
EDIT: TL;DR Digital downloads are convenient only up to the point where it's less of a hassle to download said game rather than drive to the store to pick it up, and I'd be willing to wager that most people would rather drive a few miles and play the game that day than wait for a 50GB download.
But somehow I doubt you'll be able to sell your downloaded game to Gamestop for $20 store credit.
But somehow I doubt you'll be able to sell your downloaded game to Gamestop for $20 store credit.
What Gamestop are you selling to? You'd have to sell them 100s of games to get $20 in my experience :v:
Yes, I love downloading things at my 76 kb/s internet.
It took me 2 weeks to download Team Fortress 2
Why would you bother even trying to play a multiplayer game with that sort of bandwidth?
Obviously CD's are going to stop being made in the coming years, but I guess the world isn't quite ready for that due to a lot of people having terrible internet and bandwidth limits
