Ukraine stops paying for gas, Russia’s Gazprom warns Ukraine of gas shutoff
MOSCOW, March 7 (RIA Novosti) – The head of Russia’s state-run energy company Gazprom said Friday that Ukraine has stopped paying for Russian gas supplies, which could trigger a repetition of 2009’s so-called “gas war” between the two countries.
According to Alexei Miller, crisis-hit Ukraine owes Russia about $1.89 billion in unpaid natural gas bills after failing to pay for February supplies.
“This violates our contract and international trade practices. We cannot supply natural gas for free,” Miller told reporters in Moscow.
“Ukraine must pay off its debts and current deliveries or face the risk of returning to the 2009 scenario,” during which Russia halted all deliveries to Europe via Ukraine’s pipeline system for two weeks.
Gazprom has already announced that it will annul its discount on natural gas sales to Ukraine from April, following last month’s ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Russia and Ukraine have long fought over natural gas deliveries, jeopardizing supplies to Europe, a major Russian gas buyer.
In 2009, the most severely affected countries were in southeastern Europe as Bulgaria was forced to stop production at some of its industrial plants, while Slovakia even declared a state of emergency.
I've got some gas for Putin. It's my farts
well shit
Czech Republic is 75% reliant on gas going through there AFAIK

That transgas thing, yeah

Ask laserbeams to fart some gas for you?

Not sure if that wouldn't conflict with wanting to feel clean after taking the shower!

I'm going to sound really dumb now, but I don't quite get how this works. If they cut off supply to Ukraine would it stop at their border and thus screw anyone further down? I thought there would be like T junctions that fed into Ukraine and then it carried on.
But I guess if that was the case the owner of the gas wouldn't be able to shut it down.
Some alternatives to russian gas supplies would be shale gas from EU member countries & middle east gas that would run through turkey.

They lower production(by stopping facilities and laying off workers) or stockpile it in reservoirs(and not selling, thus losing money until/unless they can somehow funnel it off to it's largest consumers).

Yes, that's my scandal, they are going to screw us up if this happens. We already had issues with this few years ago, when Russia and Ukraine couldn't agree about the gas supply - that was part of the reason why the Yamal-II was considered to be built - to bypass the unreliable supplier which Ukraine has been for quite a while.
And no, there obviously are t-junction-like connections on the pipe but Russia can't control them on Ukrainian land so if they decide to cut off Ukraine, they are doing it at the border.

It would have to run through Syria before getting to Turkey though so not going to happen.
I know my speculation is probably exaggerated, but this whole Ukraine and Russian Invasion thing seems like it's going to have really serious repercussions in the future.
Actually tho, I looked around a bit more and apparently we should be fine thanks to Nord Stream and such, I remembered old info that didn't include this and other pipelines (which were partially built specifically due to unreliability of Ukraine).

You're supposed to burn the gas to heat the water in your water heater, not bathe with it.
Silly Czechs,
Nord Stream being this

It was laid in 2011/2012 and I haven't heard of it being finished so I missed that I guess.

No wonder they spend so much gas!

maybe it's about time to admit that driving on the right side of the road isn't the only habit Hitler has left behind, here
I have a feeling that a richer country will come in and pay the bill.

The Iberian Peninsula, Northern Europe(except Finland and the other Russian-neighboring ones) and the UK too it seems, we're not so dependent on them.
Ukraine is gonna have problems though, they're the ones at risk of being shut off regardless of sanctions.
Giving away free natural gas is bad for business, Ukraine should have seen this coming.
This seems like a really good time to invest in renewable energy.
Wow, I'm surprised Finland is so reliant on Natural Gas from Russia despite not being a previous Eastern Bloc country.

Price and Availability (Do they produce it?)
Those factors don't depend on whether they were or not a EB country.

Because our green politicians are fucking idiots.
A move that pisses off both the Russians and Europe.
Nice going, Ukraine.

Their new government is just as retarded as the last one, if not even more.
Poor Ukrainians, it's the same as the Orange Revolution.

Wait 'till they elect "Orange princess" out of desperation in May.
I kinda want to say I told you so to the European countries that went anti nuclear and shut off their nuclear power plants but that wouldn't really have any affect

most heaters are gas powered not electric

Shouldn't have laughed but damned if I didn't anyway.
