The Courage To Do The Impossible Lies In The Hearts of Men. Hello Facepunch. Today I'd like to tell you about one of my favourite underrated movies. When it was released, it immediately became a hit, but only for a month or so. After that it was quickly forgotten. So, without further ado, Master and Commander: The far side of the World. Plot unspoiling wikipasta: The film takes place in 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Aubrey of HM Frigate Surprise is ordered to pursue the French privateer Acheron and "burn, sink, or take her a prize." As the film opens, Surprise midshipman Hollom briefly spies a dark shape in a fog bank. After some uncertainty and hesitation, the call to beat to quarters is given. Aubrey and the other officers at first see nothing, but the Surprise soon comes under attack by the Acheron's greater range cannon fire... And then you get the movie and watch it to see what happens. Right. The two main characters are the Surprise's captain (Russell Crowe) and doctor (Paul Bettany). The movie won two Oscars and I'd like to note that if you happen to have a good surround sound system, then this movie is going to blow your mind. It feels like the cannons are rumbling right next to you. Awards: 76th Academy Awards: Won, Best Cinematography, Russell Boyd Won, Best Sound Effects Editing, Richard King Nominated, Best Picture Nominated, Best Director, Peter Weir Nominated, Best Art Direction Nominated, Best Sound Mixing Nominated, Best Costume Design Nominated, Best Film Editing Nominated, Best Visual Effects Nominated, Best Makeup Trivia: Master and Commander was released the same year as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which won every award of the eleven that it was nominated for. The two awards that Master and Commander won were in categories for which The Return of the King was not nominated. The book, from which the film is based, was actually set during the "War of 1812" between Britain and America, and in the book the Acheron is an American made vessel used by America. By contrast, in the film the Acheron is an American made ship used by the French, who are the nemesis of Britain in this film. Final words: If you like ships, get the movie. If you like Russell Crowe, get the movie. If you like awesome movies, get the fucking movie. Fucking awesome movie. The naval battles are excellent and the cinematography is beautiful.
I love this movie. Especially the battles, as the cannon balls are ripping through the hull and splinters are flying everywhere. Also, you must always choose the lesser of too weevils :D
i laughed when the guy was trying to shoot the seagull and shot the doc instead.
I'm gay for Russell Crowe. And even if I wasn't, I'd still love this movie. Having Paul Bettany and a hobbit in his crew doesn't hurt either.
Damn good film, I like how it's more of a "realistic" take on naval warfare. I think Pirates of the Caribbean kinda overshadowed this movie somewhat which is a shame.

Great movie. I loved the dining, the ocean, the seamanship, the witty remarks. Excellent movie.
To be honest, I didn't like this movie.
I've got the DVD. Should i watch it?
If you have the DVD then you must've at some point had the intention of watching it. Sooo... why the fuck not?
But they are two completely different movies!
And?
Didn't this movie lost the Best Picture Oscar to Titanic?
